George W. Allen

ALLEN, George W. George W. Allen, 79, of Glastonbury died Thursday (April 8, 2004) at Hartford Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Newark, NJ, he graduated from Hartford Public High School '45 and W.P.I. '48. After seven years at Pratt and Whitney as a mechanical engineer he became a math teacher and guidance counselor at East Hartford High School and then at Penney High School for 37 1/2 years. He was a President of the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury, a President of the Glastonbury Council of Churches, the Treasurer and Board Member of Glastonbury ABC for many years and a longtime member of the Glastonbury Democratic Town Committee. George has worked with several organizations on affordable housing both in Glastonbury and the Hartford area, including the building of houses for the Hartford Habitat for Humanity. He has enjoyed tennis, golf, skiing, bicycling and family camping; his retirement traveling has included "Global Volunteer" service projects. George leaves his wife, Joyce, of Glastonbury; his son, David Allen of Boston, MA, Richard Allen and his wife, Nan of Rochester, NY, Carol Allen Arnold and her husband, Jeff from Andover, MA, Kristin Allen DeBalsi and her husband, Tom from Canaan, NH, and six grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 13, at 11 a.m., at the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury, 16 High St., South Glastonbury, CT 06073, or to Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1933, Hartford, CT 06144. Glastonbury Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
