Hans Schafer



Hans Schafer, 79, husband of Sarah Schafer and father of Cindy Schafer, all of West Hartford CT, died in a car accident on January 5, 2014. A native of Baltimore MD, Hans worked as a hospital administrator in Baltimore, Columbia SC, Fort Worth TX, Nashville TN, and Louisville KY prior to retirement in Connecticut. Hans proudly served in the US Marine Corps, including tours on the USS Forrestal and the USS Leyte. He maintained a lifelong interest in military history. In retirement, Hans was an active member of the Universalist Church and the Old Guard of West Hartford. He was a frequent volunteer at a variety of hunger relief programs in the Hartford area. The Farmington River Trails were a favorite destination for Hans. He explored the trails from New Haven to Massachusetts on a sporty recumbent trike, making frequent stops to pet every dog along the way. Hans is survived by a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Qualls and 7 nieces and nephews: Barbara Simkowski, Rodney Qualls, Shelby Qualls, Ellen Qualls, Bruce Jackson, Peter Jackson, Edward Jackson. He is also survived by two cousins: Ted Schaefer and Sylvia Sagel Woods. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Universalist Church of West Hartford, a local animal shelter or the . A private burial will be held at a later date.
