COONEY, Harold Dyer

Harold Dyer Cooney, 63, of Belle Plaine, KS passed away Saturday, (September 14, 2013) at his home. Born in Hartford on July 14, 1950 to Rachel (Morrison) Cooney and the late William Oliver Cooney, he graduated from East Hartford High School before serving in the US Marine Corps. Harry held various sheet metal engineer and construction positions in Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, Arizona and Connecticut before settling in Kansas. A resident of Belle Plaine, KS for the past 15 years he retired from Boeing Aircraft where he was a structural engineer. He enjoyed anything with a motor that went fast including Nascar racing but especially his Harleys. Although physically rugged, he would give relative strangers the shirt off his back. Harry is survived by his mother, Rachel M. Cooney of East Hartford; his brother Robert J. Cooney and wife Laurie and their children Meredith and Will of Lunenburg, MA; a nephew Shane Whitney and his wife Nikki and their daughter Jasmine of Deansboro, NY and a niece, Christine Whitney and her children Lucy and Damion of Plainville, CT. He was predeceased by a brother William B. Cooney and his sisters Patricia M. Cooney and Joanne Whitney.
Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home in Belle Plaine, KS is handling the cremation with a private service to follow in CT.
