VANDERBILT, JR., Harry D.
Harry D. Vanderbilt, Jr., 95, of Windsor Locks and loving husband of 65 years to Irene (Faniola) Vanderbilt passed away on Friday December 7, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital. Harry was born in East Hartford and graduated from East Hartford High School and the Morse School of Business. Harry enlisted in the United States Army with the 43rd Infantry Division and served during World War II from 1941 and honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1945. Harry served in the following campaigns, Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, New Guinea and Luzon and received the following decorations, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Star. He owned and operated for many years until his retirement, Airfield Service, Bradley Air Freight and Airport Taxi in Windsor Locks. Harry was a member of the American Legion Gensi-Viola Post 36, the V.F.W. Smalley Brothers Post 6123 both of Windsor Locks, the Suffield Sportsman Club and the Stafford Game Club. In his spare time Harry enjoyed skiing, golfing, fishing, hunting, family vacations and dancing with his wife. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by three children, Joan Gray and her husband, Glen Bienkowski of Windsor Locks, David Vanderbilt and his wife, Karen of Columbia, CT and Peter Vanderbilt of Windsor Locks; his beloved granddaughter, Rebecca (Gray) Bramley and her husband, Michael of Suffield; and two great grandchildren, Ashton Mikan and Caiden Bramley. Harry was predeceased by his son, Harry Vanderbilt, III and sister Marian Bentley.
Relatives and friends can join the family on Monday, December 10, 2012, from 4-7 p.m. at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks. A funeral service for Harry will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery with military honors.
