METCALFE, Joan F. (Spencer)

Joan F. (Spencer) Metcalfe, 77, of Farmington, formerly of West Hartford, died Saturday (December 1, 2012) at home after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was the wife of Richard E. Metcalfe, Sr. Born in Hartford, the daughter of the late Llewellyn T. Spencer and Mary (Carrier) Spencer, Joan grew up in West Hartford and graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1957. She and Dick married on Aug. 17, 1957 and then spent two years at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. Dick and Joan returned to West Hartford in 1960 where they raised their five children. Joan had particularly fond memories and friendships from the years spent on Smallwood Road in West Hartford. Joan worked part-time at Saint Joseph College before taking a position with Hartford College for Women, where she worked 18 years as administrator of the paralegal department. She retired in 2000, two years after the school merged with the University of Hartford. She was a devoted mother and enjoyed her children's activities with a faithful diligence. Joan was a wonderful cook! She was famous for her lasagna, pancakes, and chocolate cake. She enjoyed her bridge club, backgammon, and playing pinochle with the Murphy's. Joan was active with the Insurance City Open golf tournament for a number of years and served as Co-chairlady in the late 60's. She also served as a volunteer with the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Care, the UConn Health Center and the William H. Hall High School Class of 1953 reunion committee. She was a communicant of the Church of Saint Peter Claver, active with their prayer groups, and a member of the West Hartford Garden Club. Joan enjoyed spending time at Point O' Woods in Old Lyme and after retirement spending winters in Bonita Springs, FL. Besides Dick, she leaves five children and their spouses, Debora M. Doucette and her husband Christopher of Lancaster, MA, Richard E. Metcalfe, Jr. of West Hartford, Gregory B. Metcalfe of Farmington, Brian D. Metcalfe and his wife Cynthia of San Marino, CA, and Christopher T. Metcalfe and his wife Alice of East Hartland; her brother Paul Spencer of New Hampshire; and her six grandchildren, Braden Doucette and Avery, Nora, Gunnar, Luke and Katelyn Metcalfe. She also leaves her in-laws Bruce and Carol Metcalfe, Joyce and Ted Pallman, and William Pinchbeck; along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson, Alexander C. Doucette; as well as her sisters-in-law, Kristine Pinchbeck and Cynthia Spencer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 at the Church of Saint Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford.
