CURTIS, John J. Sr.

John J. Curtis Sr., 72, died on July 26, 2013 in Rutland. He was born Aug. 12, 1940 in Proctor, VT, the son of Adrian A. and Carmen (Marfuggi) Curtis. Survived by his wife and friend Judy Divine Curtis. Survived by four wonderful children John Curtis Jr. and his wife Alice of Slate Hill, NY, Jeffrey Curtis of Suffield, CT, Christopher Curtis and his fiancée Jennifer Bray of Columbia, CT, and Julie Hayward and her husband Jeffrey of Bridgewater, MA. Also survived by nine beautiful grandchildren which were his pride and joy, Catherine, John, Julie, Timothy, Casey, Michael, Maxwell, Dylan, Samantha, and one great-grandson, James. Survived by his brothers, Robert Curtis and his wife Carol, and Albert Curtis and his wife Gail, all of Proctor, VT, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his parents, a brother, Adrian A. Curtis Jr. and a sister Jean Peterson. John enjoyed his children growing up, he coached little league baseball and youth soccer and he had many memorable times with them while white water canoeing, biking, hiking and cross country skiing. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and Past Grand Knight of Housatonic Council #40 in New Milford, CT. He was a member of the Rutland Elks Lodge #345. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Proctor-Pittsford Country Club and served on the sports committee and was a past Senior Club Champion. John was a 1958 graduate of Proctor High School and a 1960 graduate of Vermont Technical College. He then worked for the State of Connecticut as a transportation planner for 35 years retiring in 1995. Upon retirement, John and Judy roamed the country in a recreational vehicle for 12 years where he truly enjoyed all the different birds and animals in the USA and Canada.
A funeral service will be held Monday, July 29, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the Clifford Funeral Home, 2 Washington St., Rutland, VT.
