John W. "Whit" Anderson

ANDERSON, John W. "Whit" John Whittier "Whit" Anderson, age 89, passed away Thursday (April 27, 2006) at Essex Meadows, Essex. He was formerly of Old Saybrook, beloved husband of Margery (Cushman) Anderson. He was born on April 8, 1917 in Lincoln Rhode Island son of the late Ernest L. and Hope (Whittier) Anderson. Whit Anderson is a veteran sailor with a lifetime of experience beginning as a youth in Narragansett Bay. He has been in the Merchant Marine and for training, as a young man, sailed on a three-masted barque, and schoolship Nantucket. He has been a marine surveyor for 20 years. Whit always had a good story to tell. He will be sadly missed. Beside his wife he is survived by two daughters; Judith Sawyer of Hilton Head, NC., and Gail Engel of Ono Island Orange Beach, AL., one brother Ernest L. Anderson Jr. of Orlando, FL, and one sister Carolyn Fleming of Wilmington, NC., five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held on Monday, May 1 at 1 p.m. at The First Congregational Church of Old Saybrook. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Old Saybrook, Main Street, Old Saybrook or to the Old Saybrook Historical Society, Main Street, Old Saybrook.
