Joseph A. Carano



JOSEPH A. CARANO, 83, of Norwich, CT, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Julia M. (Saviano) Carano for 53 years. Born in Warwick, he was a son of the late Lucio L. and Domenica (Lancellotta) Carano.

Mr. Carano served as the Director of Staff Development and Training for the State of Connecticut, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation until his retirement in 1989. He was a graduate of U.R.I., class of 1952 and received his Ed.M Degree from Boston University in 1961. He served in The United States Army during the Korean War and received several medals including the Bronze Star.

He served on several advisory boards and was a member of the National Rehabilitation Counseling Assn, where he served as president of the Northeast Region. Mr. Carano received several prestigious awards for his contribution to the field of Vocational Rehabilitation and his outstanding service to persons with disabilities.

He was the loving father of Gina M. Carano of Uncasville, CT, Carl J. Carano and his wife Colleen of Waterford, CT and the late Cynthia A. Carano. Cherished grandfather of Joseph R. Carano. Caring brother of Vincent, Louis and Albert Carano and Mary Gallagher, all of Charlestown, RI.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 20, 2014 from 2:00-5:00 pm in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick, RI (Exit 12A on I-95). Relatives and friends are invited and may also join the family on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 12:30 pm at The R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI for a committal service with military honors.
