Leo A. Vanesse(1918 - 2014)



Leo A. Vanesse, 96, of Florida, formerly of Bristol, widower of Elizabeth (Englert) Vanesse, died on Sunday (February 9, 2014) in Merritt Island, FL. Leo was born in Bristol on January 7, 1918 and was a son of the late Eugene and Evelina (LaFrance) Vanasse. He was a longtime Bristol resident where he worked at New Departure for 44½ years. After retirement, he moved to Cocoa Beach, FL where he resided for the past 20 years. Leo was a United States Army Veteran of World War II where he was a Private First Class assigned to Company I, 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division. His company landed on Utah Beach on D-Day and fought across Europe. He received a Purple Heart medal for wounds received in action in France and he also was awarded the Bronze Star medal. Leo is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sandra Vanesse of York, ME, and Michael Vanesse of Bristol; four daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Fred Pennito of Cape Canaveral, FL, Patricia and David Allaire, JoAnne and Michael Butler, and Lynn and Carlos Orlando, all of Bristol; a sister, Cecile Moore of Huntington, LI, NY; eight grandchildren, Shannon (Bill) Merz, Elizabeth (Douglas) Mearkle, Ryan Allaire, Carie Vanesse, Stephen (Courtney) Butler, Amanda (Ryan) Hill, and Nicholas and Max Orlando; ten great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Oscar, Raymond, and Paul Vanesse, and a sister, Laurette LeClair. Funeral services will be held on Monday (February 17, 2014) at 9 AM from Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, to St. Joseph Church, 33 Queen St., Bristol, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM. Burial, with military honors, will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at Funk Funeral Home on Sunday between 2 and 4 PM.
