CHAPONIS, Leonard B.

Leonard B. Chaponis, 85, of New Britain, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2013 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut. Born in Shenandoah, PA on May 30, 1928, the son of the late John and Anna (Yesinsky) Chaponis, he was raised in Hartford, graduated from Bulkeley High School, and lived in New Britain for the last 56 years. He attended Whitney School of Art in New Haven and received a B.F.A. degree from Hartford Art School and Hillyer College (University of Hartford). He worked as a graphic arts designer at the Travelers Insurance Company for 37 years, retiring in 1993. Mr. Chaponis was a member of St. Jerome Church, Connecticut Art Director's Club, Travelers Retirees Club, V.F.W. Post #511, American Legion Post #0006, and the New Britain Senior Center. Mr. Chaponis was a member of the Connecticut State Guard and served two terms of duty in the U.S. Army, the first stationed in the Alaska Aleutian Islands, and the second in Korea where he was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze service stars. He was preceded in death by his first wife (Concetta Iemolo Chaponis) and his second wife (Mary Howard Chaponis). Survivors include his son Robert J. Chaponis and daughter-in-law Mary Judith of Bethlehem, PA, two grandsons Jonathan and Stephen, his brother John Chaponis of West Hartford, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and stepson Christopher Hicks.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Burritt Hill Funeral Home, 332 Burritt St., New Britain on Saturday, Oct. 26th, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., at St. Jerome Church, 1010 Slater Road, New Britain.
