Lillian Patterson Velhage(1925 - 2014)

Lillian (Pat) Patterson Velhage, 88, of Old Saybrook, CT, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, at The Connecticut Hospice in Branford. She was born in Elliott, Arkansas on July 21,1925 to Dee and Clara Patterson. She graduated from Fairview High School in Camden, AR in 1942. During WWII she worked in the San Fransisco Navy ship yards and afterward she was a stewardess for United Airlines. She met her future husband Francis (Frank) Velhage after transferring to the New England corridor. They were married September 8, 1951, in West Hartford, CT. They moved from Hartford to Buffalo and Albany, NY. Pat worked as a Gray Lady Service with the Red Cross and after her children were grown, she fulfilled a lifelong wish when she earned her RN in 1983 from the Albany Medical Center School of Nursing. Pat and Frank retired to Old Saybrook, CT in 1998. She loved reading, music, history and nature and fed all the creatures who came to her back yard. Pat was a faithful member of several congregations throughout her lifetime: Elliott Baptist Church in Elliott, AR; St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Albany, NY; Grace Episcopal Church in Old Saybrook, CT and Flanders Baptist Church in East Lyme, CT. She volunteered for many years at the Middlesex Hospital Thrift Shop in Old Saybrook, CT. Pat is survived by her daughters Melissa Velhage Keefe (Brian) of Rome, GA and Jeanne Velhage of Old Saybrook, CT, her grandchildren Andrew Keefe of Alpharetta, GA and Thomas Keefe of Milledgeville, GA, her siblings Effie Ann P. Dodgen (Rev. Dr. Larry) of, Siloam Springs, AR, David B. Patterson (Mary Louis) of Houston, TX, and twenty-three nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and her siblings Dee P. Patterson, Nellye P. Smith, James H. Patterson, William D. Patterson, and Ruth Helen P. Scruggs. The family would like to thank the staff at The Connecticut Hospice for their loving care. A graveside service for family will be held Monday, June 30 at 1pm at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford, CT.
