BEAN, Sr. Mary Grace
Sister Mary Grace Bean (Helen Cecilia Bean), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, CT, died at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, CT on September 25, 2013. Born in Great Mills, MD on March 28, 1915, of the late James Alphonsus Bean and Daisy Agnes (Hebb) Bean, Sister Mary Grace entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on June 25, 1930 and celebrated her perpetual Profession of Vows on August 24, 1936. Sister was 98 years of age and had been in Religious Life for 83 years. Sister Mary Grace received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and Reading from Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT, and a Masters Degree in Education and Religion from Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT. Sister also attended Catholic Teacher College in Providence, RI for several summers. Sister Mary Grace taught in Archdiocesan Schools, during which time she spent 20 years at Our Lady of Sorrows School, Hartford, CT. Sister then returned to her home state of Maryland and taught for 20 years at St. Michael School in Ridge, MD. In all, Sister taught school for 54 years. For the last six years in Ridge, Sister Mary Grace, not wishing to retire, honed her culinary skills and served great meals to the Sisters living at the convent before coming to the Provincial House in 2000. Sister Mary Grace would then spend the next decade or so sewing and mending whatever the Sisters needed done. Idleness was not to be part of her life. Sister Mary Grace's determination to be a great teacher was a reflection of how she lived her life. Her independent spirit, her sense of humor and her ability to laugh at her foibles made her well-liked by her Sisters. She will be remembered for her spirit of independence and ability to maintain a quiet dignity as found in great Southern Belles. In addition to her parents, Sister Mary Grace was predeceased by her sisters, Ann Marie Bean, Inez McConnell, Beatrice A. Newbold, Henrietta Moffatt and Mildred Jurovaty, and her brothers, James F., Joseph L, William B. and Lawrence H. Bean. Sister is survived by her Sisters in Community, her cousin, Sister Rosalie Bean, CSJ and her sisters, Evelyn Norris and Dolores Pinno, her in-laws, Mae Bean, Virginia Bean, and Bernie and Mary Jean Goldsborough, and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call at the Convent of Mary Immaculate in West Hartford, CT on Saturday, September 28 from 9-10:45. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 in St. Joseph Chapel. Interment will be in the Sisters of St. Joseph Cemetery immediately following the mass.
