Neal Johnson, 90, of Hilton Head Island, SC, passed away May 11, 2013. He was born in Santa Monica, CA. Mr. Johnson was a graduate of UCLA where he received a degree in electrical engineering and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. During WWII he served as Lt. in the US Navy and saw action in the Pacific aboard the Destroyer USS Lamson. Prior to his retirement in 1987, Mr. Johnson was Chief Avioncs Engineer at Kaman Aerospace and is considered a pioneer in the design of remotely controlled drone helicopters. He is a past member of the American Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the American Helicopter Society. He and his wife moved to Hilton Head Island, SC in 2001. Besides his wife, Laura, Mr. Johnson is survived by a son and his wife, David and Anita Johnson of Destin, FL and a daughter and her husband, Joan and John Larson of Bluffton; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Mallot and a grandson, Neal Larson. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
