Roger P. Abbate


ABBATE, Roger P. Roger P. Abbate, 65, of Rocky Hill beloved husband of Mary (Handzlik) Toce, passed away Friday, (June 16, 2006) at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Hartford, August 5, 1940, son of the late Pio J. and Caroline (Brignano) Abbate. He was a graduate of Conard High School, Class of 1959. Roger was the owner and operator of Elm-Cap Industries, Inc., a third generation business founded in 1952 by his father Pio. In 1978, Pio retired and Capital City Burial Vault Co. merged with Elmore Co. of Rocky Hill moving to West Hartford which formed Elm-Cap Industries. Roger and his son, R. Thomas purchased the Company in 2000, which continues with great customer loyalty. Roger was very active with the Wilbert Corporation on a National level and served on numerous boards furthering the advancement of funeral service. Roger was a proud member of the Over the Hill Gang, Eastern Chapter of CT, Over the Hill Gang, San Diego, CA, and Good Guys Association. He enjoyed RVing, traveling, cruising with his pride and joy, the '55' Chevy, yardwork, and nurturing his tomatoes. Roger is survived by his two sons, R. Thomas Abbate of Newington and Steven D. Abbate of West Hartford; a daughter, Peggy A. Wright and her husband Gerry of Bolton; a step-daughter, Dawn M. Toce of Windsor; and six beloved grandchildren, Nicole, Cody, Cory, Devin, Kyle and Kaleigh. He was predeceased by his son Christopher and his brother Richard. Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 180 Farmington Avenue, Hartford on Tuesday, June 20th from 4-8 p.m.. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Wednesday, June 21st at 10 a.m. in the Church of Saint James, 767 Elm St., Rocky Hill followed by burial in the family plot at Saint Mary Cemetery, New Britain. Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice Program, 103 Woodland St., Hartford, CT 06105. The family encourages all street rodders to please bring their cars to the church to lead Roger's procession.
