SMITH, Russell Edmund


Russell Edmund Smith, 75, of Shavertown, PA, formerly of Plainville, CT passed away Monday, (October 7, 2013) at the United Methodist Homes Wesley Village Campus, Jenkins Township, PA. He was born in Plainville, CT on August 15, 1938 to the late Loyal Lauridsen Smith and Mary Fleming Smith. He graduated from Plainville High School in 1956, and was president of the senior class. At PHS he played football, basketball and baseball, pitching for the Blue Devils. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN in 1960 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He was a Monogram Club member at Notre Dame, earning his letter as the manager of the baseball team. Russ went to work in the Field Lease Department of Aetna Life Insurance Company in Hartford, CT in 1960 and remained at Aetna until 1989 when he retired as an officer of the company. He then relocated the family to PA to work for Prudential Asset Management Company as Director of Defined Contribution until he retired again in 1994. He was an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Plainville, CT, initially serving as an altar boy in the 1940's and 1950's as well as serving for many years on the parish finance council. He later became an active member St. Therese's Church in Shavertown, PA, also serving on the parish finance council. Russ was a founding member of the Tridex Investment Club in Plainville, CT. He was also a founding member of the Plainville Exchange Club. He was co-owner of Connecticut Gold Stamping, a business he shared with his good friend, Thomas P. Maskery. He continued his lifelong interest in sports, playing golf and softball in Plainville's "Over 35" league. Russ is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Patricia Blair Smith; their four children, Cara Smith Shackelford and her husband Patrick, of Erwin, NC; Michael Loyal Smith and his wife Sandra, of Milford, OH; Maureen Hamilton Doctoroff and her husband Jeffrey of Medfield, MA; and Samuel Franklin Smith, of Natick, MA; and six granddaughters, Julia Shackelford, Diana Shackelford, Maura Smith, Abigail Smith, Hannah Doctoroff and Lillian Doctoroff. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Smith Wrona and her husband Edward of Wallingford, CT.
A prayer service will be held Friday, October 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad Street, Plainville, CT 06062. Interment will be made in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Plainville, CT. Friends may call Friday from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to St. Therese's Church, 64 Davis Street, Shavertown, PA 18708 or to the Holy Cross Association, Box 771, Notre Dame, IN 46556.
