Seymour Benson

Seymour Benson, 86, of Bloomfield and formerly of West Hartford, passed away after a long illness, on Wednesday April 9, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Marilyn (Kosoff) Benson. He was the son of Louis and Sarah (Neleber) Benson. He was a graduate of UCONN, class of 1949, and was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He worked as an Insurance Agent and was a designated CLU. Seymour was a past President of the Emanuel Synagogue in West Hartford and a member of the synagogue with his family since he was 8 years old. He was extremely active in religion, business, community, sports, and music. He and his family spent his summers at the beach at Neptune Park in New London, which he loved. He served as President of many of these groups. He was a past President of the Jewish Federation and of the Million Dollar Round Table in the insurance industry. He was also a member of the Regents. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and devoted friend to many. Besides his wife Marilyn, he is survived by daughter, Joy Gerber of Hopkinton, Mass., sons; Peter Epstine and his wife JoAnn of Escondido, CA. Brad Epstine of Farmington, and Michael Benson of Lakewood, NJ. and daughter Ruth Brown and her husband Marc of Cranford, NJ. eight cherished grandchildren; David and Liza Gerber, Jonathan and Leslie Gerber, Haley and Shelby Epstine, and Zachary and Jessica Brown, six adored great-grandchildren; Benjamin Fink, Chloe, Ryan, and Lily Gerber and Caroline and James Gerber. He was also like a father to his three nephews; Jay, Hillel, and Jonathan Levin, and loved by many relatives and dear friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Rosalyn (Schwartzberg) Benson, and beloved sisters Marilyn Ross and Mildred Levin. The funeral will be Friday April 11, at 11:00AM at the Emanuel Synagogue, Silverman Auditorium, 160 Mohegan Dr., West Hartford, with Rabbi David Small officiating. Interment will follow at the Emanuel Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield (intersection with Jordan Lane). Following interment the family will receive friends back at the Emanuel Synagogue including a meal of condolence. The family will receive again for Shiva on Sunday, April 13, at the Benson residence, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Seymour's memory may be made to the Emanuel Synagogue or to the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford, 333 Bloomfield Ave., Suite C, West Hartford, CT., 06117.
