Stephen M. Garratt, 89, of Simsbury, CT passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. He was born in Sewanee, TN on October 13, 1924, the son of the late Dr. George A Garratt and Barbara (Lillie) Garratt. Steve was a long time resident of West Hartford, later in Old Lyme and most recently at McLean independent living. He graduated from Hamden High, Brown University class of 1949 and served in the Army
Ground Forces in the European Theatre Operations during WWII
. Steve's career was in the insurance industry, where he started with Home Life Insurance Company of New York, then retired after 26 years with Connecticut General Life Insurance Company and moved on to work another 10 years with Conning & Company. His area of focus was in Life Reinsurance Operations marketing and sales management. He enjoyed the outdoors hiking, playing tennis and golf all up until the age of 85. He was a former member of the Hartford Tennis Club, Hartford Golf Club, Old Lyme Country Club, and Black Hall Club. He had a lifetime interest in the arts as a painter and was active with the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. He was predeceased by his wife Joan Deming after 38 years of marriage and his brother Rowland M. Garratt. He leaves his daughter Virginia of West Simsbury and her partner Richard Stanley, a son David of Chagrin Falls, OH and his wife Emily, three granddaughters Macy, Emily and Katherine and great granddaughter Eleanor. The family would like to thank the McLean Village community where Steve enjoyed 11 years of independent living and the Palliative Care staff at John Dempsey Hospital.
