Arline Miller Obituary

Arline Graybill Miller, 94, beloved wife of the late Robert Sterling Miller, passed away peacefully at Hartford Hospital on Thursday, January 16, 2014. She was born in Lancaster, PA on May 22, 1919 and was the daughter of the late Henry Jerman Graybill and Elizabeth "Alma" (Funk) Graybill. She most recently resided in Saint Augustine, FL and Newington, CT at Cedar Mountain Commons Assisted Living where she had many friends. Arline grew up in New Rochelle, NY where she spent many happy summers enjoying her father's summer swim camp on Long Island Sound.

Arline was a proud graduate of Tufts University, class of 1941, where she met the love of her life and husband of over 60 years, Bob. They married at the chapel on Tufts campus in August of 1941. Arline greatly valued education having come from a family of educators. She received her Masters degree in Education from Central Connecticut State University and taught reading and elementary education in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Florida.

Arline and Bob lived in many places during their long marriage including New Rochelle, NY, Mobile, AL, Levittown, NY, Greenwich, CT, Glastonbury, CT, Elizabethtown, PA and Saint Augustine, Florida. They enjoyed travelling during their long retirement and were able to visit almost 100 countries worldwide and all seven continents, including Antarctica. They shared many happy years of retirement at their beach house in Florida, welcoming grand-children there every summer.

Arline was an intelligent, strong and practical woman who had a great sense of humor, a compassionate nature, and a gregarious and out-going personality. The secret to her long life was that she appreciated a "really good" gin martini daily. She loved to garden in Florida and was proud of her beautiful azaleas. She also was a quilter, a member of the Saint Augustine Ballroom Dance Association, a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Saint Augustine FL, and an avid book club reader.

She will be dearly missed by her children, Richard "Dick" Miller of East Hartford, CT, Cindy Miller Baril and her husband Joseph of Groton, CT, and Andrew Miller and his wife and Arline's beloved daughter-in-law Barbara Sobieski of Glastonbury, CT, her grandchildren William O'Berne of Waterford, CT, Mikki Oliveira and her husband Gerry of East Harford, CT, Montria Taylor of Pinedale, WY, Evan S.Miller of Glastonbury, CT, and Avalee E. Miller of Wilton, CT. She also leaves her precious seven great grandchildren, all of whom brought her great joy in her final years.

She will be especially missed by her dear sister, Valeria Rellstab, of Daytona Beach, FL Besides her parents she was pre-deceased by her brother Henry "Marshall" Graybill and grand-daughter Christine Baril Bardales.

There are no calling hours. A private interment ceremony at Memorial Presbyterian Church Columbarium in Saint Augustine, FL will be held at the convenience of the family.
