Eileen Newcomb Obituary

Eileen J. Newcomb, 94, widow of Joseph A. Newcomb, Jr., formerly of West Hartford, died Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Brandywine Senior Living in Litchfield. Born in Manhattan, the daughter of John Clifford and Ellen (Riordan) Clifford, she made her home in West Hartford for over 40 years. Eileen received her bachelor's degree from the School of Education at Fordham University. She met her husband at a Christmas party in 1946, after his service with the U. S. Army in France and Germany. Her husband's career in the insurance industry took them to Texas, Virginia, and Danbury, Connecticut, before they established their home in West Hartford, where she subsequently taught second grade at St. Thomas the Apostle School. She regularly volunteered at UConn Health Center's neonatal unit and was active with various literacy programs in West Hartford. She is survived by her six children, Mary E. Newcomb of West Hartford, Joseph A. Newcomb III and his wife Margaret Fleming Newcomb of Wilmington, North Carolina, Catherine E. Newcomb of Simsbury, Barbara A. Newcomb and her husband Charles E. Coates III of Litchfield, Mark K. Newcomb and his wife Linda Lum Newcomb of Lantana, Texas, and Jeanne M. McGeehin and her husband Dr. William H. McGeehin of Litchfield; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister and two brothers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 18, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Neonatal Care Fund, C/O UCONN Foundation, 2390 Alumni Drive Unit 3206, Storrs, CT 06269. I remember my younger brother and sisters had Mrs. Newcomb as their 2nd grade teacher at St. Thomas, she helped to lay a strong foundation for educational and personal growth, not just for them but for a multitude of other lucky students. On behalf of my whole family, please accept our condolences for your loss.

I share the loss of the entire Newcomb family. Mrs. Newcomb was a smart and gracious woman, and spending time in conversation with her was always a great pleasure for me. She had a dry but gentle wit that always had me smiling. I can say with certainty that I'll never forget her.

I will always remmber Eileen. She was a person you could talk to, and have a good laugh. She praised her husband, and all of her children and grandchildren. I believe she is at peace now. Thoughts and prayers to all of her family.
