Solomon USHERY Obituary

USHERY, Solomon B. Solomon B. Ushery, On Good Friday, (April 22, 2011), Solomon B. Ushery, a devout Catholic, and loyal servant of Almighty God, passed away peacefully at Alexandria Manor in Bloomfield. He was 86 years old. His son David was at his side. Sol was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Winifred "Bee Honey" (Gordon) Ushery. Sol was born January 15, 1925 to the late Eula Mae Hollis. For virtually his entire life, Sol had been a popular, easily recognized figure in the Hartford/Bloomfield area. He grew up in the North End of Hartford, and went on to spend nearly 37 years serving its citizens as an employee for the Department of Public Works and also Licenses and Inspections. He approached every job with passion and professionalism, and was warmly regarded for the post he held upon retirement; leading the city's efforts to curb its ever-growing rodent population. Through the years, Sol received many awards and citations for his work as a union shop steward and active involvement with the Greater Hartford Central Labor Council. He also was a long time board member of the Hartford Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union. Sol was also known for his spiritual life, often offering holy rosaries to friends and strangers alike. He was one of the oldest living members of St. Michael's Church in Hartford. In the 1970's he founded the church's usher board. He was a charter member and first Grand Knight of the church's chapter of the Knights of Peter Claver, St. Benedict's Council and Court 311. He was also a founding member of St. Justin's Council 8011 of the Knights of Columbus. For nearly three decades, Sol was as a Minister of The Eucharist, serving those in need at St. Francis Hospital and fellow parishioners of St. Michael's. He received the prestigious Venerable Pierre Toussaint Award from the Most Rev. Daniel A. Cronin, S.T.D., former Archbishop of Hartford. Sol Ushery put his faith and family first, and will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known him. In addition to his son David, who is a television anchor in New York City, Sol is survived by his daughter-in-law, Isabel Ushery, and a grandson, Austin Ushery, both of New York; His sons-in-laws, Elpidio and Consuelo Rivera, and a dear friend since childhood, Minnie Chatfield. He is also survived by nieces Susan and Judy, and nephew Adam. Sol was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Green, and sister Lillian Green. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 28, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, 7 Clark Street, Hartford. Interment will follow at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. His family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor. Donations in Sol's memory may be made to St. Michael's Church, 7 Clark St., Hartford CT 06120. For online condolences, please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com.

Dear David,

My heart goes out to you and your family. I send my condolences to you for the loss of your beloved father. Although, he is not here physically, remember, he will always be with you in spirit. Your father was a good man with a beautiful heart. You and I have a lot in common in our lives. My beloved father, my heart, has also walked through the spiritual veil and has gone home to the higher power on Feb. 4, 2011. But the funny thing is our Dads were good friends as devoted ushers together @ St. Micheal's church. My family also had services @ St Michael's and Carmon's Funeral Home as well. So I know they're probably saying their hellos' again up there. They're in a very special, peaceful place now, reunited with loved ones. So celebrate your father's new path. He is on a higher level now. He will always be with you. Let him go with love and to know that he is not gone but just on the other side of the door awaiting to welcome you through the veil one day. We will always remember your father. And I pray for strength & comfort for you and your family to pull through this.

With much love, peace and grace always,

Kibby Phillips & Family, Enfield, CT :)

David,
I am truly sorry for your loss. I remember when your father came home from LA after the passing of my father with whom he shared a room. We often would talk about how God was truly in the midst while the EMTs worked on dad. Mr. Ushery truly loved God and his church and he will be truly missed.

Our family is praying for your family.

Dear Ushery Family, It was my honor to know Brother Sol through the Greater Hartford Labor Council. When my dad was hospitalized, I often would see him in St. Francis and he always found the time to stop what he was doing to offer me support and compassion during very hard times.
