Jennie Zachs Obituary

Jennie R. Zachs, 104, born in Russia and a lifetime Hartford resident, died peacefully at the Hebrew Home and Hospital Wednesday (January 8, 2003). She was the daughter of Benjamin and Julia Zachs who emigrated from Russia in the early 1900's. She was predeceased by her three brothers, William, Harry, and Edward; and a sister, Anna H. Zachs. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews and great and grand-great nieces and nephews. Ms. Zachs graduated Hartford Public High School and studied in Germany while at college. Jenny was originally a schoolteacher. Later in 1939, she founded The C-Thru® Ruler Company. Ms. Zachs continued to work at the company into her mid 90's. She was a pioneering businesswoman who achieved numerous honors, including the 1980 Office Products Dealer Woman of the Year. She was an honorary lifetime member of the National Office Products Association (NOPA) and in 1962, established the first NOPA college scholarship program. She was also a lifetime member of the National Art Materials Trade Association. In 1964, Jennie traveled with the Hartford Chamber of Commerce on the Yankee Peddler Aircraft on a European Trade Mission to bring business to Hartford. She was the only female executive on this mission. She had a passion for the opera and was one of the original donors to the Metropolitan Opera House. She was a lifetime member of the Agudas Achim Synagogue in West Hartford. She supported and was a director of the University of Hartford Associates. Ms. Zachs was also a donor to many other philanthropic organizations. A private service was held on Friday, January 10, 2003. Donations may be made in her memory to the Hebrew Home and Hospital or the Greater Hartford Jewish Federation. Arrangements entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
