Albert Flemke, 97, passed away on Sunday (November 18, 2012) at Cobalt Lodge with his family at his side. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Mary (Rankl) Flemke in December of 2002. Al was a self- taught mechanic and had worked at Jack's Garage in Colchester before operating his own garage in Westchester. He later became a local area builder. He built over 80 houses in the East Hampton, Hebron and Colchester area. Albert was the fifth child born to Gustav and Mary (Schadtle) Flemke on July 18, 1915 in Marlborough. He resided in Hebron until 1957 when he moved his family to a home he built in East Hampton. He leaves behind his three daughters, Judith Flemke of East Hartford, Patricia Kissinger and her husband John of East Hampton, and Jeanne Lantman of Arroyo Grande, CA. He leaves his grandchildren John Kissinger of Madison, WI, and Angela Booth and her husband Jeremiah of Nipomo, CA and their three children Ella, Benjamin, and Kinsley, and many nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his family being predeceased by his five sisters, Lena, May, Emma, Louise, and Bertha and his four brothers, Fred, Ernest, Gus Jr., and Charles. Together Al's family provided him the help and comforts necessary to enable him to stay in his home until the last 10 days of his life.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 25th from 2-4 p.m. in the Spencer Funeral Home 112 Main St. East Hampton. Jeanie, Judy and Patty and family,
I thought I had left a message in the guest book when your Dad passed, but don't see it. I just wanted to know what a huge presence your Dad was to me growing up. I can't count the times your Dad took the time to show and teach me so many interesting things that fascinated a small boy like me. I'll never forget spending time in his shop or his trucks or even riding in his dump truck or on his lawnmower with him when I was a little guy--a thrill I'll always remember. He was kind and patient as he answered probably hundreds of questions about tools and wood working, tractors and trucks, etc, etc, etc. He and your Mom were very close friends of my parents. Your Dad and my Dad were the best of friends and I got to know your Dad when I was very young. As I grew up, I appreciated how well he took care to perform many repair and maintenance jobs at my Mom's house. He built that house and it is still a wonderful example of master carpentry. It will surely outlast my five-year-old house, and it's over 50 years old now.

Your Dad was truly a hero to me growing up, and I still think of him as a "man among men" and he will always be one of the most cherished people in my life. God Bless Him!

What a wonderful life Al and Mary shared, raising 3 daughters who made them so proud. Al built our first house ( patiently teaching us those skills as it went up) on Daly Rd and Mary gave me (a new bride and mother) cooking, sewing and children raising skills I still use today. Country life, country fairs - a good ox pull - and a conversation with family and friends sitting by the pond or under a tree - I'll always remember.
