Conrad Castonguay Obituary

Conrad E. Castonguay, 81, of Vernon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Limestone, Maine, the son of the late John and Marie (Raymond) Castonguay, he grew up and lived in Hartford before moving to Vernon over 60 years ago. Conrad earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Hartford. Prior to his retirement in 1990, Conrad was a nurse at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington for 10 years, and previously he was a nursing supervisor at Rockville General Hospital and St. Francis Hospital. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Rockville. Conrad trained over 300 paramedics at UCONN for the State of Connecticut. He also taught at Capitol Community College and at St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing. Conrad loved family, the ocean, opera, playing Charlemagne, old movies, especially Hogan's Heroes, and traveling with his buddies and his friend Rena. He was an avid and devoted Boston Red Sox fan. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his seven brothers, Leo, Thomas, Raymond, Roger, Norman, Louie and Henry Castonguay, and his two sisters, Gilberta Haney and Yvonne Castonguay. His family will receive friends for calling hours on Saturday, June 18, 2016 from 9 - 10 a.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 33 West Street, Rockville. I worked for Conrad back in the late 70's at RGH where he instituted the Cart Program that I was part of. He had a commanding presence but was such a wonderful man to work for. My condolences.

My condolences to his family. I am proud to say that I was one of the four original medics that Conrad had trained for the first medic class for Bradley International Airport. His legacy continues on with the dozens of medics that are still serving their communities as a result of his dedication to his profession. I remember that some of us in that initial class often referred to his program as the "Conrad School of Anxiety". It was a loving term for a great man. He had the knack of instilling knowledge in us and then throwing us for a loop by "what if". Hence the name. We learned a lot in that program. Although the medical director was another great mane, Dr. Phillip Stent, it was Conrads' program. Conrad, rest in peace my friend!
