Amy Potter Obituary



Amy Lang Potter, 89, of Simsbury, wife of the late Reverend Lyman G. Potter, died Sunday, November 17, 2013 at McLean with her family by her side. She was born August 30, 1924 in Schenectady, NY, daughter of the late Chester Henry and Ruth Amy (Rilling) Lang. Amy attended The Brown School, Nott Terrace High School and St. Agnes High School and was a graduate of Connecticut College, Class of 1945, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. On September 21, 1946 she and Lyman were married in her parent's living room and spent over 60 years together prior to his passing in February of 2008. The Potters had lived in many areas over the years, including Hartford, CT, Detroit, MI, Putnam, CT Westlake, OH, Simsbury, CT and Saratoga Springs, NY. Together they traveled to Europe, India, China, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Amy was a member of the First Church of Christ in Simsbury and numerous volunteer organizations. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, tennis and most importantly her friends and family. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret "Meg" Potter Gaines of Simsbury; son-in-law Michael Franconi of Newington; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Gaines Guidice and her husband Jim, Sarah L. Gaines and Andrew A, Gaines, all of Simsbury; her great grandson, Henry Guidice and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides her beloved husband, Amy was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Potter Franconi, who died in April of 1998 and her sister, Margaret "Maggie" Lang Lehmann who died in October of 1989. Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury on Friday, November 22nd from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, November 23rd, 11:00 AM at the First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Connecticut College, 270 Mohegan Avenue, New London, CT 06320 or to the First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT 06070, to the McLean Foundation or McLean Hospice, both at 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
