Bernard Winick Obituary

Bernard Jerome Winick, 92, passed away on Monday, December 2nd at his home in West Hartford. He was the beloved husband, for 48 years, of the late Pauline (Gordon) Winick. Born in Hartford, on April 16, 1921, he was the son of the late Samuel and Gussie (Lassow) Winick. "Buddy" went to trade school after graduating from Weaver High School to become an electrician. After leaving trade school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. After returning from military service, he went to work with his father building many homes in West Hartford. It was during this time that he became a master carpenter who could build or fix almost anything. He married his wife, Pauline in 1947, after which they spent their lives in the home he built in West Hartford. He was a founder and partner of the Resolute Construction Company for a number of years before going back to work on his own. After retiring in his mid-eighties, he was able to devote more time to his love of fishing and boating. Quick to help family and friends, everyone who met him will always remember that his integrity, warmth, and sincerity was reflected in his firm handshake. Besides his wife Pauline, he was predeceased by his sister Helene (Winick) Cremer. He is survived by his brother Melvin and his wife Karen of West Hartford, his three sons; Steven and his wife Glenda of Chaplin, Jeffrey and his wife Linda of West Hartford and David Winick of Freehold, NJ, cherished grandchildren Candace, Daniel and his fiancée Julie, Emily, David and his wife Lauren, and Matthew, great-grandchildren Maddie and Sarah Rose, many nephews and nieces, and his close companion Rita Franceski. Graveside funeral services will be held TODAY, Dec. 4, at 1:00PM, with full military honors, at the Emanuel Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield (corner of Berlin Tnpk. and Jordan Lane). In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association. Arrangements are being handled by the Hebrew Funeral Association.

I just this week found out about Bud Winick passing away back in 2013. Growing up in West Hartford with my great friend, Dave Winick, I spend lots of great times at their house. Bud had that nicely strong and genuinely fun spirit. His commitment to family was ever present! Bud and Pauline always welcomed me into their home like I was a visiting son! I also noticed his amazing talents for carpentry and house improvements....as well as his love for the outdoors for fishing.

Our hearts are heavy on learning of Buddy's passing. Our condolences to all those who were close to him. We so enjoyed his company over the last year for "Thursday night dinners out"; his recollections of his beloved late wife and close friendship with my late father, Leon M. Aucoin, with whom he worked at Avon Old Farms when it was an Army Hospital for veterans blinded in WWII; his fond recounting of a recent drive to Boston for his grandson's birthday and his kind and appreciative nature for the simplest enjoyments of life. For all those who truly loved and were close to him, he will be sorely missed.

I am so sad to hear of Buddy's passing. I have such fond memories of Buddy from the time I was a little girl. We last talked by phone a couple of years ago, and he was the same warm, loving, special man I remembered. My sincere condolences to the entire Winick family.
