ZIEKY, Calvin "Cal"
Calvin "Cal" Zieky, 79, of West Hartford, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 in the comfort of his home and surrounded by his loving wife and family, after a courageous three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the beloved husband for over 40 years of Sandra Travis Zieky. Born in Hartford, he was the son of Harry and Nellie Shuman Zieky. Cal grew up in West Hartford and graduated Hall High School and the University of Pennsylvania. He was owner and president of Standard Mechanical Contractors in Hartford when he was offered a position as Vice President and Manager of the northeast district of Natkin and Company of Denver, CO. He retired as Senior Project Manager for B-G Mechanical Contractors. Many major construction projects in the Greater Hartford area and throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts benefitted from Cal's expertise and leadership. Cal's sense of fairness and honesty were recognized by all who knew him, from subcontractors and tradesmen to other business associates to his friends, his golfing buddies, and on to his wife and family. Cal's major love was his family; he was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle. Cal was an accomplished golfer and, in his retirement years, he began to play bridge and recently achieved the level of Life Master. He and Sandy were members of the Beth El Temple in West Hartford and Tumblebrook Country Club. In addition to Sandy, he is survived by five children: Arthur Zieky and his partner William Witkowsky of Newington, Linda Zieky Ahern and her husband Richard of Acton, MA, Pamela Zieky Messing and her husband David of San Ramon, CA, Elizabeth Rosenberg and her husband David of Lafayette, CA, John Rosenthal of Hartford, and seven adored grandchildren: Max, Ben and Sam Ahern, Jack and Josh Messing, and Ally and Jake Rosenberg. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Zieky Marholin, his nieces and nephews, Debra and Richard Glassman and Elizabeth and Craig Flanders, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roger and Alison Travis as well as many lifelong dear friends.
The funeral will be TODAY Thursday, October 17 at 12 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Ave., West Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow at the Beth El Cemetery, 15 Jackson St., Avon. Following interment the family will receive friends at Cal and Sandy's home with an evening service at 7:30 p.m. and again on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cal's memory may be made to the Jewish Family Services, 333 Bloomfield Av, West Hartford, Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Hospital or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Howard Hochster and Oncology Nurse Karen Underwood, at the Smilow Clinic for their outstanding care. Cal will be forever in the hearts and minds of all those who shared life with him. Funeral arrangements provided by Hebrew Funeral Association, West Hartford.

Dear Sandy,
I only found out about Cal's death last night from an email from Ilene Mahler. My sincere condolences. He now gets added to my list when I say the Kaddish.
You know how much I enjoyed both of you at bridge and how elegant and classy you both were in playing. We all watched the situation as it enfolded, but nary a peep out of him and I can imagine the toll it took on you and the family, but also know you are firmly embedded among many great friends who will see you through this next yicky phase of life.
I read the obit, never knew that about Cal, very impressive. I will always remember him for his laughter, which is such an important thing we have to give to each other.
I will add Cal to my list of people I say Kaddish for. And you take care of yourself-be gentle on yourself.
With sincere condolences, much empathy, and love,
Elizabeth Garner
