Christopher Smith Obituary

Christopher Smith, age 102, died peacefully at his home in Simsbury, CT on December 23, 2013. Born in Hornell, NY to Herbert and Lou Smith (both deceased), Chris had one brother, Frank, who preceded him in death. He is survived by a nephew, Donald Smith of Colorado, and a step-daughter, Tamara Real of Michigan. Chris was a star football player for Crosby High School in Waterbury at a time when the players still wore leather helmets. He graduated from Springfield College in 1934 and went on to receive his PhD in Sociology from Columbia University. From 1942-1946, he served as a Master Sergeant in the Army, stationed on Okinawa during intense fighting. Chris taught at several institutions, finishing his career at the University of Hartford. In 1995, he published "Climbing the Corporate Ladder," his sociological study of employment advancement opportunities in an industrial setting. Chris' first marriage ended in widowhood. In 1980, Chris married Jeanette Smith (deceased), with whom he built a beautiful home in Bloomfield, CT, according to his own design. Chris was a member of the Unitarian Society of Hartford, where he founded and chaired for many years the "Men's Luncheon Group," a monthly gathering devoted to good companionship and thoughtful discussion. Always a natty dresser, his polished appearance, exuberant piano-playing, and stories of his youth will be missed by his step-daughter and all who knew him. Funeral services will be private with a memorial service to be announced. Please visit Chris' "Book of Memories" at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online condolences.
