DZEN, Donald "Spike", Sr.
Donald "Spike" Dzen Sr., 73, of Broad Brook, beloved husband of Linda (Gauvin) Dzen, died peacefully on Thursday (July 11, 2013) at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born on Jan. 29, 1940, in Hartford, son of the late Steven and Mary (Tyrchuk) Dzen. Spike attended Ellsworth High School and served in the Army National Guard. He was a farmer all of his life, a partner of Dzen Farms, Inc. for many years. He later became a partner with Dzen Brothers, Inc. with his two sons. Spike was a member of the F.F.A., and the Parents Group Resource Committee at Rockville High School for six years. He was always an avid listener of Polka music, enjoyed UCONN athletics and the New York Yankees and enjoyed bowling for 49 years. Along with his wife Linda, of over 51 years, he leaves his sons, Donald S. Dzen, Jr., and his wife Jennifer and Joseph Dzen and his wife Holly; his siblings, Mike Dzen and Marilyn Palauskas; grandchildren who were the love of his life, Joey, Ally, Jordan, Steven, Nicholas and Elizabeth; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his godchildren, Michael Schon, David Schon, Nancy Palauskas, Edward Palauskas Jr., and Julie Reiter. He was predeceased by infants, John Michael, William Thomas, and Anne Marie, a daughter-in-law, Nicole.
Family and friends may gather on Monday, July 15, 2013, 9 a.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor; followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., at St. Catherine Church, 4 Windsorville Rd., Broad Brook. Burial will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery, Broad Brook. His family will receive friends on Sunday, July 14, 2013, from 2-5 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Stain Glass Window Fund at St. Catherine Church, Broad Brook CT 06016.
