Dorothy M. FULLER Obituary

FULLER, Dorothy M.

Dorothy M. Fuller of East Hartford, passed away on Saturday, (March 9, 2013), at the Colonnades assisted living in Charlottesville, VA. Born on Feb. 17, 1915, Dorothy's early life was spent in Plainfield, where she participated in Campfire Girls and attended school. After graduating at the top of her Plainfield High School class, Dorothy went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Radcliffe College and later a Master of Arts degree in English Education from Harvard University. Dorothy married Sumner Hayes Fuller in 1942. A devoted educator, Dorothy began her teaching career at Williams Memorial Institute in New London, and continued at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor. At the latter institution, Dorothy taught English and served as both Dean of the Faculty and Director of Studies, and in those capacities she was responsible for developing and directing a number of initiatives that included teacher training and evaluation and the implementation of technology by students and faculty. Dorothy began her retirement in 1986, but remained keenly interested in all facets of education, often remarking when asked about her profession that she always loved school and had always wanted to be a teacher. Dorothy moved to Virginia in 2007 to be close to her daughter, residing at the Colonnades since her arrival in the Old Dominion. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Sumner H. Fuller. Survivors include her sister, Marjorie Kenney of Fall River, MA; two daughters, Joyce F. MacDonald of Earlysville, VA, and Susan Fuller of Etobicoke, Ontario Canada; and two grandchildren, Rebecca Lyon of Peterborough, Ontario Canada and Ian Lyon of Calgary, Alberta Canada. Additional survivors include nephews, William Kenney of Fall River, MA, David Kenney of Waterford; and son-in-law James MacDonald of Earlysville, VA.
The family wishes to recognize and thank the staff of the assisted living department at the Colonnades for their exceptional care, kindness, and professionalism. In accordance with Dorothy's wishes, no local service is to be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy's memory may be made to Loomis Chaffee School 4 Batchelder Road, Windsor, CT 06095 or to one's favorite charity. Hill and Wood Funeral Home of Charlottesville, VA is in charge of arrangements.
