SHUMAN, Dorothy Sylvia (Buder)
Dorothy Sylvia (Buder) Shuman, 94, of West Hartford, formerly a longtime resident of Bloomfield, died peacefully Tuesday, (July 23, 2013). She was the beloved wife for 41 years of the late Jack Jacob Shuman. Born in Holyoke, MA, she was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Murblatt) Buder. She was a graduate of Holyoke High School and began working in the town as the head bookkeeper at the Youth Center. She then worked as an actuary at the Travelers Insurance Company for almost 25 years. She was a lifetime member of the former Teferes Israel Synagogue of Hartford and Bloomfield and was a past President of its Sisterhood and Mr. and Mrs. Club. Dorothy loved following the UCONN Women's basketball team and her Boston Red Sox. Her all-time favorite player was YAZ. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She is survived by two sons, Arnold Shuman of New Britain and Steven Shuman and his wife Judy of Bloomfield; her three sisters, Ruth Stambouvsky of Springfield, MA, Jeanette Gershowitz of New London and Rosalie Gillam of Enfield; five cherished grandchildren, Matthew Shuman and his wife Sophie of Westport, Jacob Shuman of Raleigh, NC, Jacqueline Shuman Levtow and her husband Ross of Great Neck, NY, and Stefanie Shuman Schwartz and her husband Jordan of Weehawken, NJ and Zachary Shuman of Boston, MA; her sister-in-law Bernice Buder of Bloomfield; several nieces, nephews and many dear lifelong friends. Dorothy was predeceased by her brother Frederick Buder.
The funeral will be graveside on Friday, July 26, at 11 a.m. with Rabbi Gary Lavit officiating at the Teferes Israel Cemetery, 45 Meriline Ave., (corner of Meriline and Lynn Court) in the Elmwood section of West Hartford. Following interment, the family will observe Shivah and receive friends at a location to be announced at the cemetery and then again on Sunday from 1-4:30 p.m. at the home of Steve and Judy Shuman. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy's memory may be made to a charity of donor's choice. The family expresses a heartfelt appreciation to all the caregivers of the Hebrew Home on second floor south wing. Dorothy will be remembered by all those who she shared life with.
