Dwight N. "Bud" Dewey, 87, of West Hartford and Old Saybrook died on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at UConn Medical Center. He was born in Hartford, CT, on August 31, 1926, to Gordon Estes and Doris Rogers (Palmer) Dewey. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gladys Dorothy (Ward) Dewey, and three sons, David John Dewey and his wife Jacqueline of Cape Neddick, ME, Robert Dwight Dewey and his wife Francine of Enfield, CT and Steven Ward Dewey of West Hartford, CT. He was predeceased by his sister Jane C. (Dewey) Ferris. He also leaves 7 grandchildren, Robert Dewey Jr., Rachael Dewey, Beverly Dewey, Matthew Dewey, Patrick Dewey, Kadene Limmer and Melissa Hoebel, 5 Great grandchildren, Benjamin Limmer, Nathan Limmer, Savannah Dewey, Jacob Dewey and Isabella Dewey, a niece Janette Grace, and two nephews, Ken Ferris and Charles Ertel. He was educated in Hartford graduating from Weaver High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 - 1946. He was employed by The Hartford Courant where he was a circulation supervisor and Branch Mgr., The Capewell Mfg. Co. where he was awarded two patents for his designs of a parachute quick release which is still in use today, Rank Scherr Tumico Co. selling precision measuring instruments and The Wiremold Company Flexible Duct Div. as Mgr. of Mfg. Engineering and Quality Control. He was a 74 year member of the Order of DeMolay for young men. He was Master Councilor of his chapter and Chapter Advisor of Noah Webster Chapter in West Hartford. He served 7 Executive Officers as a State Deputy. He received many awards including: Advisors Honor Key, William Campbell Award, Cross of Honor, Degree of Chevalier, Legion of Honor, Representative DeMolay and the Masonic Pierpoint Edwards Award in Bronze. He served as Grand Commander of the CT Court of Chevaliers and the Preceptory of Legion of Honor. He was elected to be an Honorary member of DeMolay International. He was a Chapter Member and past President of the CT DeMolay Foundation. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of West Hartford Wyllys - St. Johns #4. He was a longtime resident of West Hartford and summered at his home in Old Saybrook. He was a 50 year member of The First Church of Christ, Cong. in West Hartford serving on many boards and committees including Senior Deacon. He also served as Sexton for 25 years. Bud so enjoyed being a Justice of the Peace. He married 14 "lucky" couples including two of his grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at First Church of Christ Congregational, 12 South Main Street, West Hartford at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2013. There will be no calling hours per the family request. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of First Church or American Heart Association. Sandy his beloved dog, would love a donation to go to the donor's favorite puppy shelter.
