SAYERS, Eugene A.
Eugene Alfred Sayers, 81, of Middletown, husband of Mary Suzanne (Baylis) Sayers for 59 years, passed away on Thursday, (October 31, 2013), surrounded by his loving family at the Hospice Care Unit in Middlesex Hospital. Born in New Haven, he was the son of the late Francis and Florence (Shaw) Sayers. Gene raised his family in Wallingford, lived in Durham and then moved to Middletown. He worked for the William Mack Printing Company in North Haven for many years and was a member of Notre Dame Church in Durham and then Saint Pius X Church in Middletown. In his retirement, he worked at Lyman Orchard Golf Club and loved to play golf especially with his sons. Throughout his life he was involved in many volunteer organizations. He was a huge Red Sox fan and UCONN Basketball fan. Along with his wife, he is survived by three sons, Stephen Sayers and his wife, Diane of Middlefield, Christopher Sayers of Honolulu, HI and Joseph Sayers and his wife, Sara of Middletown; two daughters, Catherine Shwaery and her husband, Frederick of Springfield, VA and Suzanne Sayers and her husband, Scott Phillips of West Hartford; a brother, Thomas Sayers of West Haven; ten grandchildren, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Melissa, Brittany, Hannah, Zachary, Sean, Jacob, Paris, and Evan; and two great grandchildren, Layla and Lucas. Gene was predeceased by his brothers, Jack Sayers and Francis Sayers and his sister, Shirley Bushnell. The family would like to express their gratitude to all those who cared for Gene during this difficult time.
Family and friends may call on Monday, November 4 at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church St., Middletown from 5-7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 5 at 10 a.m. at Saint Pius X Church, 310 Westfield St., Middletown. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Main Street, Middletown. Donations may be made in Gene's memory to Middlesex Hospital Weiss Hospice Unit, 28 Crescent Street, Middletown, CT 06457. I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Bunny's passing. When I think of him and his laughter and the sparkle in his eyes, he put a smile on the faces of all who were in his presence. He was blessed with a loving wife and a loving family. His kind and gentle ways will live on in all of you.
