OHLSSON, Gunnar I.
Gunnar I. Ohlsson, 73, of Middletown, died Friday at Mid-State Hospital. Gunnar was born in Varberg, Sweden on Jan. 7, 1940 the son of the late John and Hulda (Beckman) Ohlsson. Gunnar attended school in Sweden and at the age of 18 served in the Swedish Army. In Sweden he worked as a baker, a butcher and a waiter. He was able to see the world during his 15 months working as a waiter on the Swedish American Cruise Line. At the age of 30, he moved from Sweden with his family to Middletown. In the United States he became a skilled Tool & Dye Machinist and was employed at Royal Machine in Berlin from 1970 through 1987 and later at Serwood Tool in Kensington, from 1987 until he retired in 2002. Gunnar was a member of the Moose Lodge Chapter 1547 in Middletown. He also enjoyed playing cards in the lodge league and spending time with his many friends. Gunnar is survived by a son, Tommy Ohlsson and his wife Rosalie of Cromwell, a daughter, Susanne Hawkins and her husband Billy of Middletown; and three beloved grandchildren, Brandon, Jenny, and Matthew who brought him much joy in his retirement years. He was predeceased by his long time partner, Sigrid "Peggy" Paquette, a brother Arne Ohlsson and a sister Berit Hampe.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Friends may call at Biega Funeral Home Sunday from 3-5 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be private. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Moose Charities, Attn: Endowment Fund 155 South Industrial Dr., Mooseheart, Illinois 60539.
