Helen McCartney Obituary



Helen M. (Kiernan) McCartney, 95, formerly of South Windsor, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Grand Islander Center in Middletown, RI after a long illness. Born in Providence, RI to the late James E. and Ellen A. (Kennedy) Kiernan, Helen was a graduate of Cranston High School, Rhode Island College of Education, and obtained a Masters Degree in Education from Boston University. Her teaching career included elementary schools in Cranston, RI, Sendai, Japan and the Avery Street School in South Windsor, CT. She is survived by her sister, Sister Rita C. Kiernan, RSM of Bristol, RI; her brother John J. Kiernan and his wife Gayle of Sebec, ME; her daughter-in-law Annette McCartney of Columbia, MD; and many loving nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Robert McCartney, her two sons Robert,II and James McCartney, her sisters Virginia A. Flynn and Mary M. Kiernan, and her brothers James E. and Thomas F. Kiernan. Funeral services and burial in Arlington National Cemetery with her husband Robert will be private at her request. I knew Helen from the Grand Islander from August-November. Helen is a beautiful soul. She loved fashion and jewelry and hats and conversing about being a teacher and working in schools. She had a lovely smile showing she understood. I spent many hours with her. I will always remember Helen.
