Henry DREWNIANY Obituary

DREWNIANY, Henry F.
Henry F. Drewniany, husband of Agnes Drewniany, died on October 31, 2013 at the age of 87. Son of the late Walter and Mary Drewniany, of Westfield, Massachusetts, Henry graduated from Westfield High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and later attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he earned B.A. and M.S. degrees. He started his life career in education as a teacher of English at Lawrence High School in Lawrence, NY. He then taught at Hall High School in West Hartford, CT from 1954-59. For an additional six years he was Director of Guidance Services for the Suffield, CT public school system. For the last 20 years of his employment in public education, he worked in the Connecticut State Department of Education as a consultant in the Bureau of Pupil Personnel and Special Educational Services. The love of learning led him to study at numerous educational institutions other than the University of Massachusetts, among them Northeastern University, Adelphia College, Springfield College, University of Hartford, University of Connecticut, Harvard University, and the University of Colorado. In addition, he worked as an adjunct professor at both the University of Hartford and Central Connecticut State College. Survivors include, in addition to his beloved wife of 60 years, his daughter Paula Drewniany and husband Paul Van Steenberghe, his son Jeffrey Drewniany and wife Susan Glass, and son Peter Drewniany. He is also survived by six grandchildren -- Drew, Eric, and Julia Van Steenberghe, and Peter, Emily, and Sofia Drewniany. Among the most fulfilling times of Henry's life, along with the 60 years with his wife Agnes, were those years watching the future unfold, as both his children and grandchildren have grown into persons who have each lived up to their father's and grandfather's hopes for reaching out toward good lives, honest character, and love for their mother and loving grandmother.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions may be made to the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
