PANE, Janice M.
Janice Marie Pane, 66, of Cromwell, died Wednesday, (September 4, 2013) at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. Jan was born and raised in Hartford, daughter of the late Claudio Pane, Sr., and Mary (Sharkevich) Pane. She held several positions in the Winsted school system while raising her children, and just last year retired from Hartford Hospital, where she had worked in the Medical Records Department for more than 25 years. Jan was enjoying every minute of her retirement, and loved the extra time she was able to spend with her family, especially her grandson Michael. Jan experienced many once-in-a-lifetime adventures in recent years that she never would have dreamed would be possible, including snorkeling in the tropical reefs of Belize, exploring Mayan ruins, cave tubing through a rainforest, and paddle boarding. Her fun-loving spirit will be incredibly missed by those who enjoyed her great sense of humor, spontaneous trips to the shoreline, and her enthusiasm to always help her grandson build the perfect Lego project. She loved reading, day trips with her best friend Sandy, and all the music of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Jan's love for her family was beyond measure, and her selflessness and dedication to making life easier for those around her has impacted lives in ways she will never know. In addition to her mother, Mary Pane, of Simsbury, Jan will be forever loved and dearly missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Allison Mahon of Marlborough; her grandson and best buddy, Michael Brian Mahon, also of Marlborough; her former husband and dear friend, Brian Mahon of New Britain; sisters, Patricia Holder of Port Townsend, Washington, Carol Bermudez of Canton, and Claudia Boudreau of Rocky Hill; brother and sister-in-law, Claudio and Lynne Pane of West Hartford, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. Her presence and love with be incredibly missed by her best friend of more than 50 years, Sandy Collins of Windsor. She was predeceased by her beautiful young daughter, Jennifer Mahon, and it brought her great peace in these final days to know that they would soon be reunited. She was also predeceased by her brother, Richard Pane of Florida. Jan was so thankful and moved by the outpouring of support of her family and friends over the last three months, especially her son and daughter-in-law who were her biggest advocates and fought beside her through every step of her courageous battle. Her family would like to thank the staff of CB2 at Hartford Hospital, for the care they provided and the peace and dignity with which they handled every moment of her final days. There are no words to express the appreciation we have for the compassionate care Jan received from her nurses, PCAs and Dr. Croen. In life, Jan lived to help those around her, and in death, she will continue to help others as her wishes are carried out through her request to donate her body to the Quinnipiac University School of Medicine, where her generosity will provide tomorrow's medical heroes with an irreplaceable educational experience. In lieu of flowers, it was Jan's wish that memorial donations be sent to her grandson Michael's favorite charity, Protectors of Animals, 144 Main St. Unit O, East Hartford, CT 06118.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Jan's life on Saturday, September 14, from 12-4 p.m. at Baci Grill, 134 Berlin Rd., Cromwell, CT 06416. There are no calling hours, and burial will be private, at the convenience of the family.
