Jean Dawson Obituary

Jean Elizabeth (Ebbets) Dawson, 88, of Bloomfield CT passed away peacefully on January 12, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born in Hartford to the late Warner Addison Ebbets and Edith Elizabeth (Morgan) Ebbets on January 19, 1925. She attended Hall High School in West Hartford and Edgewood Park Junior College in New York where she studied art and drama. Jean married Graeme Colby Dawson in West Hartford on December 26, 1947. She is survived by her daughter, Dale Ann Dawson, and her husband Joseph Petrolito of East Granby, CT; and her son, Drew Kingsland Dawson, and his wife Kathryn Cope of Friday Harbor, Washington; and three grandchildren - Tyler Craig Dawson, Sierra Dale Dawson, and Melanie Cope all of Washington, and by various nieces and nephews. Jean was an inspiring woman. The first business that she started was the first nursery school in Bloomfield, which she ran for 10 years. It was a very fulfilling part of her life and the lives of all of her students and their families. This was followed by the writing and later publication of children's books. Jean was also a co-owner and manager of her husband's various businesses including Cool Pool, and other swimming pool businesses in CT and MA. Jean started a Christmas Store in East Windsor, also a new concept for it's time that attracted thousands of people from CT and MA. Later Jean co-owned and helped to manage Cummington Farm, a year round resort in the Berkshires. Jean's energy was boundless. Those who knew her best, will remember her for the countless stray animals and people that she took into her home. Jean's family home became a haven for many who needed a place to stay or heal. Jean offered incredible kindness to all of those around her. Please remember the importance of kindness every day. In lieu of flowers; donations may be made to a local animal shelter or to the Turn the Corner Foundation in its struggle to cure lyme disease. c/o ILADS, P.O. Box 341461, Bethesda, MD 20827-1461. Jean's family will receive friends Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 12:30-1:00 PM at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby followed by funeral services at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. I just recently learned of your passing, my mind is overwhelmed with fond memories of you. Your beautiful, welcoming smile Your gracious demeanor, and the way that you made everyone feel so special.
Though I have not seen nor spoken to you in many years, I want you to know how special you were to me.
I can only imagine how hard it is for Drew and Dale at this time.
You will be missed by so many and will always be in their thoughts.

Drew & Dale, So sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I have fond memories of the family gatherins (Dawson, Cummings, Willerup and Burke) when you were very young. Also regret Randy's death too.

As a summer pool installer in the late 60's I remember your mom as the glue that held Dawson Pools together. A warm, loving and giving woman who always had a kind word and a beautiful smile. My condolences to Drew, Dale and your families.

Hi Dale - Dennis and I were sad to learn about your Mom's passing. She was a great lady and I loved seeing her in the Flower Shop! One of our favorite memories with our children growing up was our weekend camping at Cummington Farms during the hot air balloon fest. You invited us and parked our tent trailer right in the middle of all the action. We were up early in our lawn chairs to watch 16 beautiful balloons take off in the early morning air. It was awesome! Our thought and prayers are with you.

Such a special women for so many people over so many years.
Jean was my 'second Mom' during the "Farm Years". Always there when things weren't going well to build you up, always in the background, allowing others to take credit for the good times, when, in fact, she was so essential to allowing those good times to take place.
She became a close friend to my Mom during those years and continued that friendship even after our lives moved apart.
I'll never forget her.

Dale and Drew I am so sorry to read about your mothers passing. We saw each other often and talked a lot when we lived in Bloomfield. During our conversations we discovered that we were related on the Tingley side. I knew your Dad also when my husband had the service station. My thoughts are with you.

I was a friend of Sally Alvord and thus came to know Jean. She was a lovely woman and was so much fun. I lost track of her when I moved away. I'm glad she had a fulfilling life.
