Joan E. Devney

1934 - 2014

Joan E. (Holmstrom) Devney, 80, of South Windsor, beloved wife of the late Frank M. Devney, died peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2014, at her home. She was born on January 9, 1934, in Boston, MA, daughter of the late Toivo and Ethel (Wright) Holmstrom. Joan grew up in Jamaica Plain, MA. She graduated from the Girl's Latin School with the Class of 1951. She went on to obtain her bachelor's degree from Radcliffe and her master's degree from Harvard. A resident of South Windsor for many years, she taught at Timothy Edwards Middle School and later went to join her husband at Travelers Insurance working as a computer programmer, a career she truly enjoyed. Both Joan and Frank were avid sports fans. She enjoyed spending summers vacationing at her family home on the small island of Vinalhaven, ME. Joan was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and aunt who loved spending time with her wonderful family. She leaves her children, Laura D. Nadeau and her husband Michael of Algonquin, IL, Steven C. Devney and his wife Donna Gray of Las Vegas, NV and Mark Devney and his wife Tracey of West Suffield, CT; a sister-in-law, Ann Paterson of Marlborough, MA; three grandchildren, David and Nicole Nadeau and Cassandra Devney, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014, 11 a.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. Burial will follow in Wapping Cemetery, South Windsor.
