John GRANT Obituary

GRANT, John Francis

John Francis Grant, 79, of Southington, passed away suddenly due to complications from a chronic illness on Saturday (August 31, 2013) at Hartford Hospital. John was born in New Britain, the son of the late George and Agnes Grant. John is survived by his wife Sandra, of Southington, son Kristopher of Middletown, daughter Jessica of Southington, and two sisters Mary Nolan of Bristol and Eleanor Palmgren of New Britain. John was predeceased by his brothers William, George and Donald "DJ", and sisters Helen, Doris, and Dorothy. He was close with his sisters-in-law Jacqueline and Deborah and brother-in-law Patrick. He had many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews that he adored. John spent most of his working career at the Custom Metal Crafters Corporation in Newington, where he developed many friendships with co-workers that extended into his retirement. He maintained a lifelong friendship with his closest pal Jim Urso, from Canton. John will be fondly remembered for his generosity, smile, and kind spirit. He had a great love for both children and animals. In particular he treasured Bella, his Italian greyhound "granddaughter" and dog angel Rocky. John enjoyed nature, bird-watching, and was able to master the art of hand feeding squirrels and other creatures. John was formerly an avid bowler and loved summers at the beach in Rhode Island with his family, watching westerns, Godfather movies, Jeopardy, and his favorite Fox News personalities. John was Roman-Catholic and had a close relationship with God, never letting a day pass without his daily prayer. He had great love for and was proud of his children and their chosen life paths toward helping others. His daughter, Jessica, has an established career as a Director in the mental health field, is a licensed therapist, and yoga instructor. His son, Kristopher, is a military veteran and works as a Registered Nurse treating sub-acute patients. Most of all, John cherished his beloved wife, Sandra, who was his best friend, dedicated caregiver and nurse, guardian angel, and eternal companion. His family will miss him with all of their hearts.
A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Southington. Calling hours will be on Monday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Meriden Humane Society, 311 Murdock Ave. Meriden, CT 06450. I have many fond memories of Uncle Jack from when I was growing up, so I was saddened when my parents called me over the weekend to tell me of his sudden passing. I remember the stories my Dad would tell about he and Uncle Jack growing up in New Britain and he would often laugh while telling them. The friendship that the two of them maintained for over 70 years was a special one. He will definitely be missed. Please accept my and my family's condolences in this difficult time.
