PAPA JR., John Smith

John Smith Papa, Jr., died at home on December 14, 2012 in Bristol. Born January 31, 1937, in Bristol, he was the son of Dr. John S. and Martha C. Papa. Educated in Bristol public elementary schools, he was graduated from the Taft School in 1954, where he was captain of the varsity soccer team, a varsity baseball and basketball player, and vice president of the athletic association. A 1958 alumnus of Amherst College with a major in American studies, he married Margaret Baird Brown, a Bethlehem, PA, native and Mt. Holyoke College alumna, in 1959. Together they moved to Charlottesville, VA, where he attended the University Of Virginia Law School, earning an L.L.B. in 1962. Attorney Papa retired in 1999 after 27 years as supervisory public defender for Superior Court #17 in Bristol. Prior to that he worked in the State of Conn. Circuit Court chief prosecutor's office in Woodbridge. Both before and after his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with family, particularly to Bermuda, North Carolina's Outer Banks, and Maine; reading mysteries; attending sports events; completing cryptic crosswords; listening to music from rock and roll to classical; and visiting lighthouses. He was also a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox. He leaves his children, Susan Lewis Papa (David Schatz) of New Haven, Martha Macy Papa Rein (Robert) of Winsted, Hannah Putnam Papa Reno (Gregory) of Earlysville, VA, and Jonathan Spurr Papa (Aurora) of Winsted; as well as grandchildren Annakate and Claudia Schatz, Isabelle and Penelope Rein, Samuel, Clara and Sadie Gilliam and William Reno, and Nicholaus Bates. He also leaves two nieces; three nephews; many cousins; an aunt and uncle; and his elder sister Carolyn Macy Papa Chivian of Loveland, CO. He was predeceased by his wife, Meg, and his parents.
A private burial will be held in Nisky Hill Cemetery, Bethlehem, PA.
