Louis Sperandio Obituary

Louis A. Sperandio, 96, died at home in Bloomfield on Monday, December 16th, amidst the warmth and beauty of the house he built over 66 years ago. The son of Marco and Aristea Sperandio, he grew up in West Hartford. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 65 years and best friend, Ruth Wade Sperandio, by his eldest daughter, Susan Walker of Humble, Texas and by his three siblings, Rita, Nino and Mario. He is survived by son, Mark Sperandio and daughter-in-law Patricia of Simsbury; daughter Kathleen Kennedy and son-in-law, Jack, of Nobleboro, Maine; daughter, Martha Sperandio and son-in-law, Brendan Roche of Granby; and son-in-law William Walker of Humble, Texas. He was blessed with eight wonderful grandchildren: John Adam Kennedy, Carolyn Emerson, Laura Walker, William Wade Walker, Ian Kennedy, Kristin Mitera, Mark Sperandio, Jr. and Dominick Roche. He had the good fortune to know all five of his great grandchildren: Aidan Louis Kennedy, Alexandra Kennedy, Wade Emerson, Susie Walker and Beau Walker. He is also survived by sister-in-law Alice O'Toole of Manchester, brother-in-law Ronald Wade of Bloomfield and many devoted nieces and nephews. Lou was a graduate of Hall High School and attended Stockbridge College at the University of Mass. He had a keen interest in both horticulture and woodworking and was driven by the strong work ethic of his immigrant parents. His landscaping talents were developed through his work for Cascio Nurseries of West Hartford as well as for Ludwig Hoffman Nursery in Bloomfield. Like so many citizens in the 1940's, his career was put on hold by the onset of World War Two. He was a supply sergeant with Company D of the 692nd Engineer Special Shop Battalion in the Philippines and New Guinea, and considered his military service an honor to the country he so greatly loved. After returning from the war, he began his lifelong profession as a building contractor and developer. Beginning singlehandedly, he built scores of homes over the years, primarily in Bloomfield and Simsbury and was a longstanding member of the Hartford chapter of the National Association of Home Builders. Lou and Ruth enjoyed an active retirement, travelling throughout the United States and abroad. They relished many happy gatherings with family and friends at their much loved summer home on Cape Cod, a realized dream after much time spent on the Cape throughout their married life. Lou approached his illness and death with great dignity and courage. He was an example to all who knew and loved him. His family thanks those who helped him on this journey, especially his devoted caregivers: Elcira Navarro of the VNA of Hartford and Lola Hardwick of South Cross, Newington. The exceptional work of the McLean Hospice Team is also greatly appreciated. A long time communicant of Sacred Heart Church, A Mass of Christian Burial for Lou will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Bloomfield on Friday (Dec 20) at 10:00 a.m. followed by internment in Mountain View Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday evening (Dec 19) from 4-7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Ave., Bloomfield.
