Martha Mikitas

1917 - 2014

Martha Mikitas, age 96, of Farmington, CT passed away Friday January 17, 2014 in Windsor, CT. She was born February 21, 1917, in Southington, CT, the daughter of the late Samuel and Minnie (VanSchoick) Billington. She is predeceased by her two wonderful husbands, Alfred J. Mikitas and Merrill G. Farrell. She is survived by her three sons: James Farrell and his wife Joanne of West Hartford, CT, Philip Farrell and his wife Elaine of Pownal, ME, Craig Farrell and his wife Nancy of Farmington, CT; and two daughters Carol (Mikitas) Taylor and her husband Carlton of New Hartford, CT, and Cheryl (Mikitas) Violante and her husband Thomas of New Haven, CT. She was also the proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Before her retirement, Martha was the Recreation Coordinator in Pediatrics at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Previous to that, she was the Director of the Unionville branch of the Farmington Recreation Association Nursery School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of West Hartford for over 60 years, where she served on the Diagonate, the Flower Committee, and taught Nursery and Sunday school. She was a member of the Eastern Star Adah Chapter #3, the Canton Camera Club, the Red Hat Society, and a charter member of the Farmington Senior Center. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother. She is predeceased by her brothers Charles and Peter, and her sisters Mildred, Alice, and Cora. She was an avid and award winning photographer - including an award from the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. where one of her photos was displayed. A woman of many talents and interests, she loved knitting, photography, gardening, and travel. Family and friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville, CT on Thursday, January 23rd, starting at 9:00am with a service to follow beginning at 11:00am. Burial will follow the service at Oak Hill Cemetery in Southington, CT.
