BENJAMIN, Princess Winifred (Sertimer)
Princess Winifred (Sertimer) Benjamin, 92, of Windsor, passed away peacefully on Thursday, (July 11, 2013) in Windsor. Born in Triumph Village, East Coast Demerara, Guyana, South America on Sept. 11, 1920, to the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Burke) Sertimer, where she lived before immigrating to Hartford in 1984 to be closer to her daughter. Princess then moved to Bloomfield in 1985, where she lived for 15 years before moving to Windsor in 1999. While living in Guyana, she worked as a caregiver and ran her own seamstress business. She was well-known throughout the community for her quality of work and her ability to fix or create anything including vestments and altar clothes for the church. During her retirement, she volunteered for the St. Martha's Guild in Bloomfield. In recent years, she enjoyed going to the Caring Connection Day Care in Windsor, where she was a member of the Red Hat Society and the bell choir. She will be remembered as a strict but loving mother who always put the needs of her family before her own. Her family, neighbors, friends, both young and old, had a great respect for her and regularly sought her counsel on problems they were facing. A devout Christian, she was longtime member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Bloomfield and was active in many of the activities at the church. She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Ann Nelson and her husband Sylvestus "Martin" and Paulette Inniss and her husband Allan "Michael" all of Windsor; a brother, Richard Alfred Sertimer of Morcombe, England; four grandchildren, Omadelle Angela Bowser and her husband Andre of Norwood, MA, Senior Airman Andrew Nelson, USAF and his wife Monique of Ellington, Grace Latoya Lee and her husband Nkosi of Hartford, and Gregory Lawson Inniss and his partner Samantha Edwards of Windsor; six great-grandchildren, Elijah Lee, Emmanuel Lee, Malachi Innis, Azariah Lee, Brooke Lynn Bowser, and Josiah Lee; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Benjamin-Lewis.
Her family will receive friends on Saturday, July 20, 9-10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., in the chapel of the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 590 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield, CT 06002.
