BEENEY, Roland J.
Roland J. Beeney, age 88 of West Hartford, passed away on Sunday, (February 10, 2013). Son of Frederick James and Sarah Evelyn Beeney, he was born on July 26, 1924. Roland spent his childhood in Danielson, CT graduating from Killingly High School. Following high school, he worked for AT&T and then he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. While in the service he attended the University of Dayton in Ohio and then served in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was discharged at the end of the war with the rank of Technical Sergeant. At that time he continued a 40-year career with AT&T, Hartford; following which he enjoyed a 30-year retirement. His retirement was filled with many interests including photography, gardening, genealogy and travel. He was a 56-year member of the First Church of Christ Congregational, UCC and a member of the Old Guard, both of West Hartford, CT. Roland lived a full, wonderful and happy life. He loved his family, friends, and colleagues, and was a devoted and much-loved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Roland is survived by his wife of 65 years, Merle Chapin Beeney; daughter Janet Burr and her husband Edward of Groton, CT; son Robert Beeney and his wife Denise of Burlington, CT; grandchildren Jean Burr and her husband John Colianni, Meghan Beeney, Matthew Beeney, and two great-grandsons, Peter and Matthew Colianni. He also leaves his sister Bernice Baxter and her husband Prescott of Windham, CT. He was predeceased by his sister Rosalie Martone and her husband Vincent of Danielson, CT. He will be remembered by his sister-in laws Maryett Carl and her husband L. Howard of North Carolina and Melissa Tobakos and her husband Frank of Georgia as well as many nieces and nephews. Papa, we love you all the moon and all the stars. Special thanks to his caregiver Olga Thomson and all his Companions & Homemakers helpers.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, 11 a.m., at First Church of Christ Congregational, 12 South Main St., West Hartford, CT with the Rev. C. Geordie Campbell and the Rev. Barbara Frey officiating. Memorial gifts in Roland's name may be made to the 300th Anniversary Fund, c/o First Church Of Christ Congregational, West Hartford. Merle - I was so sorry to learn of Roland's passing just today at church. I had the pleasure of visiting you and Roland several times at your home while delivering flowers for Parish Care and you both were so warm and inviting and such a wonderful couple to visit.
