Samuel Lebovitz Obituary

Samuel M. Lebovitz, Z"L, 56, a resident of Brooklyn, New York for the past 36 years, died suddenly at home, on Monday January 13, 2014. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Robert and Joan (Mond) Lebovitz. His mother Joan, was the first woman to serve as the President of the Emanuel Synagogue. He was a graduate of Hall High School in West Hartford and then attended Brandeis University. He then went to Or Sameyach in Jerusalem, Israel. He worked as a computer programmer and bookkeeper in the New York and New Jersey markets within the wholesale food business. He was a member of the 16th Avenue Agudah Synagogue in Brooklyn and attended all daily, Shabbat and holiday services. Sam was very close to his Rabbi, Rabbi Nissan Wolpin. He shared life cycle events with many families who embraced him as part of theirs. His quest for studying and learning Torah energized him. In just the past few weeks he served as a volunteer, teaching students at the Sinai Academy Hebrew School. Sam was an active participant in the Borough Park Jewish life. He was a loving and devoted brother and uncle and an honest and religious man. He is survived by his brother Joseph Lebovitz and his wife Suzi of Granville, Ohio and their children Kaitlyn and Abby, his sister Alisa Lebovitz and her husband Ron Michaud of West Hartford and their son, Robert Keane as well as many cousins, extended family and life-long friends. The funeral will be Thursday, January 16, at 1:00PM with Rabbi David Small officiating in the chapel of the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford. Interment will follow at the Emanuel Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, intersection with Jordan Lane. Following interment the family will receive friends and observe Shiva at his sister's home in West Hartford with an evening service at 8:00PM and will receive again on Friday from 9AM to 1PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Emanuel Synagogue or to a charity of donor's choice. Sam will be remembered by all those who shared life with him. Funeral arrangements provided by Hebrew Funeral Association, Inc., West Hartford.

Joe and Aliza,
And extended family.
Sam was a good friend. A loyal and honest soul. He was at my wedding in West Hartford in 1980 and he visited us in ISREAL a couple of times.
His gentleness and dry sense of humor made him a pleasure to be with.
We are sorry for your loss.

Dear Alisa and Joey,
Please accept my sincerest condolences for the loss of your brother. It must seem very surreal to you and your families. I know it has been a long time, but my classmates from the Yeshiva still have a special place in my heart. It is very saddening to know he left this world and at such a young age.

It sounds like he spent most of his life in a very close community. I hope he was blessed with a peaceful and fulfilling life. Sammy had a kind and patient soul, may he rest in peace. And may you, your children, and all his family and friends be comforted by your fondest memories.
Most sincerely, Joyce Lutwack Most

To the Lebovitz Family, I worked with Samuel's mother, Joan, and may have met him at some point. It was quite some time ago, back in the 1980s. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. My sincere condolences to his family.
