FRACASSO, Susanne
Susanne (Shinaly) Fracasso, 66, of Kensington, died on Friday, October 25, 2013 at UPMC's Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA after a courageous battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and complications resulting from a double lung transplant. The daughter of the late George and Catherine (McGarvey) Shinaly, Sue was born in Wilkes Barre, PA, and moved to New Britain when she was eight years old. She was a graduate of MIA and CCSU. Sue was employed at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library as an Assistant Children's Librarian for 30 years. She was affectionately known to several generations of storytime children as "Miss Sue." She was also a member of St. Paul's Church. Sue loved traveling, especially to the Cayman Islands, Aruba, California, Hawaii, Italy, and Israel. Her favorite activity was country-line dancing every Tuesday night at "The Ranch." Sue was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and her greatest joy was being with her family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Richard Fracasso; two daughters and a son, Ann Walling and her husband, Alan, of Plantsville; Amy Fracasso of Branford; and, Anthony and his husband, Tim White, of Silver Spring, MD. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren, who were her pride and joy, Olivia and Matthew Walling. She is also survived by her sister, Kathleen Charboneau, and her husband, Rick Prunier of South Windsor, CT, a niece, three nephews, and many cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, Stephen Shinaly.

Sue, I will miss our talks at the library when we both shared in remembering the good times our children shared in school, the updates about the grandchildren, and the pride you had in your childrens' accomplishments. Your smile always warmed my heart and in thirty years I never heard you complain of anything, you were truly a role model. I will miss your wonderful smile and caring personality. My condolences to all of Susanne's family and friends. I am a nurse at UPMC Presbyterian and had the pleasure of taking care of Susanne many times over the past few years. I'm sure I speak for the entire unit when I say her loss is mourned by us as well. It was a pleasure to care for her and get to know her wonderfully caring husband Dick.

Just recently I came across an article on friendship. A health professional was quoted as saying, “Childhood friends are the ones who really know you best. Those friendships are irreplaceable. The childhood friends knew our parents, knew where we grew up, and knew our first boyfriends. They are markers for our lives.”
Those years, growing up with Susanne and her family as neighbors, hold very precious memories for me. And, really, Susanne's family felt like my family too in those years.
In adulthood Susanne continued to be a wonderful friend. One event, in particular, stands out in my memory. It was the day she hosted a little birthday party for me in her home. She had gathered a few close friends together and we all celebrated. This may not seem unusual but this little party came at a difficult time in my life. This coming together of friends, and the feelings of warmth and comfort I felt were so greatly appreciated. I think the angels were singing that day, as witness to Susanne's love and generosity.
Susanne was: Fun, intelligent, warm, caring, courageous, loyal, generous. What I loved especially about her was her sense of humor. And that giggle - unique! Like no one else's.
This past Sunday's reading at Mass was from Timothy. I could only think of Susanne and the Fracasso family when I read these lines, “I have run the great race, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.” This reading was timely, to say the least.
Those words are my tribute to my beloved friend, Susanne, and to the Fracasso family. You have all shown amazing courage! And most of all - love.

Dick, Kathy and Family, I am so sorry for your loss.
Sue was a good person and I was glad to have known her. Although I did not know her as a sister, I do know how much Steve loved her and how much he wanted her to win her fight.
She was a fighter. I'm sorry she lost this battle, But she won't be alone where she is going.
My heart goes out to you. You have a beautiful family to help you through this. My deepest sympathy,
Mike Wofsy

Just to let you know that we are so sorry for your loss and that Sue touched our lives more than can be said in a few words here. My children attended her storytime eagerly and with great enthusiasm. It is because of her passion for reading and love of books that my children have developed a lifetime love of reading. That action in itself is priceless! Her smiling face and support for her love of reading will truly be missed. May God Bless you all. Thank you Miss Sue!
