Thomas Charles "Tom" Coppinger obituary, 1957-2013, Carmel Valley, CA

Thomas Coppinger Obituary

Thomas Charles Coppinger, 56, beloved husband of Tracy (Hospot), passed away unexpectedly at his home in Carmel Valley, CA, on December 23, 2013. Tom was born September 23, 1957, in Hartford, CT to Thomas M. Coppinger and Ann (Nancy) Bjorkland Coppinger McCafferty. Tom is survived by his wife Tracy and two sons, Trey and Carson. His sons were Tom's pride and joy. They enjoyed many great times and trips together, especially their last great adventure this past summer, fishing in the wilds of Alaska. Tom was a man who was in his element when surrounded by family and friends or working tirelessly to help his community in any way he could. He was one of those unique individuals that would light up a room when he entered. Tom had an uncanny ability to remember the smallest details going on within his extended family and friend's lives; he had unique timing and would always be there for you, sometimes even before you knew you needed his support. Nothing in Tom's world was more important than his family. Tom worked tirelessly to insure that he and Tracy gave their two boys, Trey (Duke University) and Carson (All Saints Day School) every opportunity to find their own passions and destiny. Attending East Hartford schools, Tom graduated from EHHS in 1975 and continued his education at Bryant University, playing varsity basketball, graduating 1979. Tom began his career in Hartford at Little Aetna, moving on to work at Touche Ross. Tom then accepted a position with DPIC, moved to Carmel Valley, married Tracy and began what he believed was his crowning achievement, a family of his own. Tom spent the past 15 years of his career with Granite Construction Company, Watsonville, CA where his vibrant presence and passion resonated throughout the company. Tom leaves behind his loving brother and sisters, Deborah (Coppinger) and Bob Heizman, Middletown, Cynthia (Coppinger) Cook and Patrick Craig, Higganum, Brian Coppinger and Karen Yaccarino, Rocky Hill and Annmarie Coppinger of Bonita Springs FL. His step-siblings, Susan (McCafferty) and Michael Reynolds, East Longmeadow MA, Shawn and Pat McCafferty Enfield, Carol Collins, Alto GA, Mike and Jeanie McCafferty, Savanah GA, Diane and Mike Colela, Upperdarvy PA and his stepfather John (Jack) McCafferty, Enfield. He also leaves behind Tracy's brother and sister; Kurt and Daralyn Hospot, Pittsfield MA and Nikki (Hospot) and Lee Pell of Sammamish WA. Tom also leaves many nieces and nephews all of whom he loved very dearly; Jay Potter, Wethersfield, Megan (Cook) and Rick Maynard, Higganum, Cody and Thomas Coppinger, East Hartford, Catherine Reynolds and Eric Koslik, Springfield MA, William Meyers, Enfield, Zachary Meyers, Naugatuck, Brittney and Chandler Hospot, Pittsfield, MA and Jacalyn and Samantha Pell, Sammamish WA. Tom also leaves behind a large and loving group of aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. Our family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the Empey and Lino families, along with Tom's many other friends in Carmel Valley for the care and support they are providing to Tracy and the boys during this difficult time. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Ann (Nancy) Bjorkland Coppinger McCafferty and Thomas M. Coppinger of Hartford, East Hartford and Enfield, Tracy's parents, Ray and Madeline Hospot of Lanesboro, MA, his fraternal grandparents, Thomas J. and Margaret (Marge) Coppinger and his maternal grandparents Charles and Mary (Molly) Bjorkland. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, January 11th at 1pm at All Saints Church on Dolores in Carmel CA. On the east coast; also on January 11th, there will be a mass said in Tom's honor at St. Michael's Church, 128 Maple St. East Longmeadow, MA at 4:00 PM. In Connecticut, on January 25th; Tom's family will hold a Celebration of Life in Tom's honor. All are welcome to visit with Tom's family between the hours of 1pm and 4pm at First and Last Tavern, 220 Main St. Middletown, CT. In lieu of flowers or other contributions, his family requests that donations to be made in Tom's name to; Carmel High School's Operation Padre, http://www.carmelunified.org/operationpadre. Tom; your love, kindness, humor and friendship will be missed by all. Rest in peace, my brother.

There are no words that describe our sorrow. The sudden loss of someone who gave such joy to all of us who knew him is so difficult to accept. He loved to share with every one the many happy memories he, Tracy, Trey and Carson experienced in their lives. Whenever Ed or I spoke with him or received a card from him he always ended with I love you. Our world is truly sad and lonely without our Tom. How blessed we all were to have him in our lives. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family. I envy those in heaven who now share eternal life with Tom.

My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Tom's family, in both in California and Connecticut. Tom really did have an incredible personality, and he could make anyone smile. I consider myself very fortunate to have spent my high-school & college years with Tom …. some great times I simply will never forget. His entire family was great and always a pleasure to be with. Rest in peace Tom.

When I read John 16:22(NKJV), I immediately thought of Tom Coppinger. I believe God is well acquainted with loss and pain. I believe that "Good", can come from "Grief". Tom is proof! He was my friend and that is good! My grief easily turns to joy when I put precious thought to the big bear hugs, and endless laughter we shared with his endearing stories about the boys, and Tray's great perseverance with them all! He would always end our visits by saying, "All right then Netty, hang in there!" He'd have a giggle, and a big smile on his face when he said this. Then he'd wink at me and leave. I can't wait for our next visit! Tracy,Trey, and Carson, my heart goes out to you all. My prayers are with you. And Thank You all for sharing Tom; what a Blessing! Netty

Our heartfelt condolences go to you Tracy, Trey and Carson- when my husband, Anton died your husband and father left us 3 bird of paradises on our car the morning of my husband's memorial and I thought how thoughtful of a family to think of us in our pain… also he showed up the last person of his memorial and said these words to us, " May you know that he's in God's hands now- it's all ok Ange". I say these words to you, he's in God's hands now and at sincere peace. I am so deeply sorry and what a powerful, funny, outgoing, and so sensitive teddy bear thru that smile. He has taught us all so much and the love he had for you, Tracy and his boys was infectious. Our hearts and prayers are with you today, and in the future. We are here for you if you need us.

It's unbelievable. I am shocked. I can't believe he is gone. I think about Tracy and the two boys and it makes me really sad. It's hard to express how bad I feel over this loss. I will always remember him and Tom's nice warm heart and his family. When I see Tom, it seems like yesterday; and the family, Tracy, Trey and Carson; seems like yesterday. I am very sorry for your loss and I will pray for him and the family.

Tracy, An incredible loss that cannot be replaced. My heart is broken for you. A wonderful man, husband, and light of your life – he will truly be missed by those near and far, family and friends. Ever a presence, wherever he was, it was the joy, laughter, and quick wit that he brought to the world around him, that provided an ever engaging spirit that will never be forgotten. While DPIC was 25 years ago, it seems like just yesterday, and the memories so vivid. Whether it was sealing the deal with Bill Breeden, providing guidance on all things financial, or the best one – a skit of Barbara WaWa and Kareem el Tom to the joy of fellow workers, it was a fantastic time. There was always the zest for life that needed to be bottled for all those “other” days. His love for you was ever so present, such that it was a bond that couldn't be broken. Thinking of you, Trey and Carson, and sending my thoughts and prayers.

We are heartbroken at the loss of our dear friend. Tom had a big smile and an even bigger heart. He was not happy until he made sure everyone in the room was smiling with him. Tom's zest for life was legendary and his infectious energy and enthusiasm endeared him to all. He was such a bright light in the lives of so many- we will feel his loss deeply. Our thoughts, prayers and love to Tracy, Trey , Carson and the Coppinger family.

What a shock to read about Tom - just unbelievable. I am so sorry for your sudden loss. Tom brought energy and enthusiasm to every situation. I knew Tom from his DPIC years and working with him was a joy. His intelligence and commitment was so evident. While I have not seen Tom for many years, he is a forever friend and his loss is deeply felt. Although many will miss and mourn Tom; none moreso than his family, to whom he was so very devoted. Please accept my sincere condolences and my wish that the legacy of memories he leaves with you will help support you during this difficult time.

Dear Tracy, Trey and Carson,
We are heartsick over Tom's passing. Can't believe just the day before we are all together at a Christmas event...so vibrant and full of vitality. Tom was a bright light; so unfailingly warm and kind. He reached out during a particularly difficult time and always checked on Errol's welfare. Trey and Carson, you are both wonderful young men, carrying on in your dad's footsteps. Tracy, you are all in our hearts and thoughts. Anything we can do, we are here for you.

Tracy, Trey and Carson, I had lunch with Tom on December 17th, was texting with him about Operation Padre and was waiting for a response on the 18th that never came, then heard the incredibly sad news on the 24th. Tom had such passion and energy and was such an advocate for his family and the youth of our community. When I would see him in town I would tell him he was more popular than the Mayor as he greeted everyone in sight. I can't believe he's gone, even now. Just remember that pain you feel is a product of having such a great Dad and Husband in your lives, and know that anyone who ever knew Tom feels like they lost a great friend. I know I do. God bless.
