Thomas L. Winkelmann

1942 - 2014

Thomas L. Winkelmann, 71 of Moodus, CT and formerly of Deposit, NY, passed away peacefully at home on January 10, 2014, in the arms of his beloved wife, Elizabeth, surrounded by his family and pets. Born October 29, 1942 in Syracuse, NY, he was a son of the late Paul and Mildred (Hinds) Winkelmann. Tom was a proud veteran, having served with the U.S. Air National Guard during the Berlin Conflict. He raised his family in Deposit, NY, where he built his own home and owned his own restaurant, Winks Place. He retired several years ago after 42 years as a Union Iron Worker with his final role being Superintendent for Riverside Ironworks in Gouverneur, NY. He was a member of Union Local 424 New Haven. Tom was an avid boater, Captain of the "Satisfier" and he was a member of the Pattaconk Yacht Club, having served on several committees and was the former Dock Master. He will be sadly missed but always remembered by his loved ones as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his wife Liz, he is survived by six children, Paul and wife Cynthia Winkelmann of Thomaston, CT, Robin Winkelmann of Cocoa, FL, Kevin and wife Diana Winkelmann of Monticello, IN, Kevin and wife Nicole Grechika of Haddam, CT, Kyle Grechika of Norwich, CT, Kassie and husband Jon Gosnell of Chester, CT; five sisters, Irene Slattery of Kirkville, NY, Kathy Stanton of Clay, NY, Shirley Lough and Kandy Wiemeier, both of Mattydale, NY and Pauleen Winkelmann of Constantia, NY; nine grandchildren and numerous extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, Leonard and Robert. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Jan. 19th from 12 - 3 PM at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Rd, Colchester. A memorial service will follow immediately at 3 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
