McKELVEY, Vincent T.
Vincent T. McKelvey, US ARMY, MAJ. (Retired), passed away on October 17, 2013 at age 91, of Cohasset, MA formerly of Granby, CT. Vincent was born in the Bronx, New York where he was a standout basketball star and All-NYC sprinter. He was drafted into the Army in 1942. He fought in Europe and was commissioned on the battlefield in March 1945 during the Battle of Germany. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, the American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 battle stars, a Victory Medal World War ll, Three Overseas Bars and an Army of Occupation Medal. He served in Korea and earned the Silver Star Medal (twice), the Army Commendation Medal (Twice), the National Defense Service Medal (twice), a Korean Service Medal, and a UN Service Medal. Vincent continued his career in the Army and served as a Military Intelligence Officer. He and his family were stationed in Japan, Germany, Georgia, Vermont, Alaska, Massachusetts and Hawaii. After retiring from the Army, Vincent earned a Masters in Library Science and was the Director of the Connecticut State Library in Hartford. Vincent was the beloved husband of Joan R. McKelvey of Cohasset and Granby, Ct. Devoted father of Vincent of Cleveland, OH, Paul and his wife Barbara of Oak Bluffs, and James and his wife Mary of Cohasset. Loving grandfather of Christopher, Michael J., Annie, Maria, Paul, James, John, Kate and Michael P. McKelvey. Great-grandfather of Hannah and Kyle McKelvey.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 22 at St. Anthony Church, Cohasset at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Tuesday, October 22 from 9-10 a.m. at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer St. (across from St. Anthony Church) Cohasset. Interment Woodside Cemetery, Cohasset. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vincent's name to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, Kansas 66675.
