Wallace F. Soulsby

1922 - 2013

On December 22nd Wallace F. Soulsby of West Hartford, (born February 12, 1922), passed into eternal rest after a long good life, lived on his own terms and at his own speed. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife, Marion F. Soulsby, (Fisher), who is with him now, just as they were when they met, some seventy years ago. A reserved quiet man of immense spirit and fortitude, he leaves a legacy of strength and knowledge for those who had the privilege to know and love him. Wallace was born in Sunderland, England, and raised by his mother Margaret and his grandmother in London, while his father, Matthew Soulsby, served in the British Merchant Marines. He joined his parents in New York City at the age of seventeen and became an American citizen through his service in the United States Army during World War II. After serving in the Army, Wallace achieved a Masters Degree in Mathematics at Columbia University and then moved to Hartford to work for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. He subsequently worked for United Aircraft in their research division. In 1969, Wallace took a job with Aetna Life & Casualty, working for twenty years as a computer systems analyst. Till the end of his life, he was fascinated by the intricacies of modern computers and the promise they hold for the future. Wallace is survived by his two sons; Peter and his wife, Bonnie, and their son Ryan of Marlborough, Connecticut; and Eric and his wife Molly of Tucson, Arizona; and his daughter, Joan Soulsby, of West Hartford, Connecticut, who cared for him personally throughout his last years at their home on Wood Pond. At Wallace's specific request, there will be no services, and no funeral. A memorial service for family and close friends will be planned in the near future. As a dying request, Wallace asked that his friends and acquaintances make a donation to a charity of their choice, and remember that a life well lived is a blessing from above.
